KANSAS CITY, KANSAS – A 25-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man who was shot and seriously wounded when he tried to rob a convenience store in that city has pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge.

Donnell H. Roberson pleaded guilty to one count of carrying a firearm in furtherance of an armed robbery. In his plea, Roberson admitted that on Jan. 10, 2011, he was one of two men carrying handguns and wearing masks who robbed the Everyday Convenience Store at 6828 Kaw Drive in Kansas City, Kansas.

Roberson was shot as he fled the store. About half an hour later, Roberson was admitted to Providence Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Roberson had two collapsed lungs from being shot. One of his lungs was removed at Providence Medical Center.

Sentencing is set for Dec. 10. He faces a sentence of not less than seven years and not more than life in federal prison.

Co-defendant, 22-year-old Jerome Brown, also of Kansas City, Kansas, pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery in violation of the Hobbs Act and one count of carrying a firearm during an armed robbery.

He’s set for sentencing Dec. 3.

This case was highlighted in a March 31, 2011, news conference in Kansas City, Kan., that focused on the tools that federal prosecutors use to fight gun violence.
