TOPEKA – The Director of Vehicles, Donna Shelite thanked Kansans and county treasurers Wednesday for their cooperation and patience as the state completes its transition to a new system that handles titling and registration of vehicles.

Last week, more than 6.8 million records were converted to the new system while state and county offices closed out of the three-decades-old mainframe system, installed new computer equipment and prepared to serve customers again.

This week, state and county offices re-opened for business and performing vehicle title work and renewing vehicle registrations in the modernized system.

“While some in our state’s largest counties are experiencing delays as employees get more comfortable with the new system and we assist more customers than usual following the system conversion, we are successfully processing thousands of transactions each day,” Shelite said. “We promise to get caught up as quickly as we possibly can, and we sincerely appreciate the understanding shown by the vast majority of our customers.”

She didn’t mention any of the problems which occurred Tuesday here in Reno County which kept the treasures office from helping those wanting to register and getting new tags for vehicles which they may have just purchased. That was one problem they had here in Reno County Tuesday. They were forced to turn people away because of that issue.

Lines were still long in the Reno County Courthouse on Wednesday, at times still extending to the front doors of the courthouse.

Because of the back log, Shelite was encouraging citizens to use two additional options for renewing vehicles. One is webtags (www.kswebtags.org) or you can do your renewal by mail through county treasurers’ offices. Both options offer great convenience and saves you having to stand in line.
