NEWTON, Kan. — Police officers were busy on Wednesday with two different incidents. The first was reported around 5 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the Newton Medical Center because a 37-year-old man walked in with a stab wound to his lower left side. The man didn’t want to provide information to the officers when asked. The man showed signs of being in a physical altercation. When questioned further, he eventually told officers he was “jumped” near the Dollar General Store on East 4th by unknown people and refused to provide any further information. The man was transported to Wichita in serious condition for further medical treatment. Officers were unable to locate evidence of the attack at the location the victim described. Officers are still looking into the details of what actually occurred.

Minutes later at 5:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of East 8th in reference to shots being fired during a domestic disturbance. Officers arrived on scene and encountered one intoxicated man in the garage who surrendered without incident.

The investigation revealed an altercation took place between the man and family members in the home. A handgun was brandished in a threatening manner and several shots were fired into the ceiling above the heads of the family members.

Family members then struggled with the man over the gun and they were eventually able to take it from him. The man attempted to obtain a rifle to use, but the family prevented him from gaining access to the rifle.

The man was arrested and booked into the Harvey County Detention Center on four counts of aggravated assault, among other charges.

Several weapons were seized from the residence as evidence.

No names were released from either incident.
