HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NTSB released its final report on a small plane crash that injured two Buhler residents in November of 2016.

The plane, piloted by Sarah Hunt, crashed into a tree shortly after takeoff. Hunt was critically injured in the accident while her husband, local dentist Dr. Dal Hunt, suffered minor injuries.

According to the NTSB report, the small Cessna 182 airplane had been refueled at the Bridgeport Texas airfield and then departed. Witnesses say the plane took off in a normal fashion, but suddenly lost power as it cleared the end of the runway at an altitude of about 200 feet. The plane landed in a field, became airborne again, then crashed into the base of a tree.

The report adds that both occupants informed a responding Highway Patrol trooper that the fuel selector switch was in the wrong position, cutting fuel off to the engine. A witness who was first on the scene also reported seeing the fuel selector switch in the off position. It appears that the couple did not reset the selector before departure.

A full inspection of the plane was conducted by the FAA with technical assistance from Cessna and the engine manufacturer. The inspection did not reveal any anomalies consistent with pre-impact failure or aircraft malfunction.
