Number of transfers in USD 308 down by more than 200 students

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — When Hutchinson USD 308 reorganized its elementary school boundaries for school suppliesthe upcoming school year they said that there would be much stricter limits on transfers.

The numbers released by the district to Eagle Radio and hutchpost.com show that the district did hold the line on transfers. USD 308 approved 131 transfers for the approaching year, compared with 334 last year. Of the 131 students, 84 were within the district, and limited to students who suffered the death of a parent or guardian, had an illness, were children of staff and siblings of special education students. Fifty-six transfers were denied.

The district also approved 47 out of district transfers under the same guidelines, and denied 16. Ten of those transfers approved were students of district staff members.

The district rearranged the boundaries and eliminated one block of classes from one of the elementary school saving the district more than $350,000.
