A 24-year-old Oklahoma man who was apparently working for Fed-Ex here in Kansas at one time was bound over for trial Monday morning for felony theft.

Ryan Burgett is alleged to have snatched a bank bag from the backroom of Heartland Outdoors in South Hutchinson while delivering packages to the store.

The manager of the store, Roger Theede testified Monday that he had counted the money and checks for sales from Friday the previous week through Monday. This was on November 15, 2011, which was a Tuesday. It was at the beginning of hunting season, but that Monday was also Veterans Day. Theede says, had the banks been open on Monday, he would have made a deposit then.

He apparently placed 20-thousand plus dollars and over 8-thousand dollars in checks in a bank bag. But, he says a friend drop by the store to see him, so he placed the bag on some live traps in the backroom, while he talked with his friend. Once the friend left, he saw it was still there. Then Burgett came into the store and made delivery of several packages and after that, the bank bag was gone.

He says he and three other employees were in the store with him at the time, but he eliminated them as suspects saying he had been observant of what they were doing.

South Hutchinson Police traced it down to Burgett as the one they suspect of taking the bank bag. An arrest warrant was prepared and he was arrested in Oklahoma, waived extradition back to Kansas to face the felony theft charge.

Judge Joe McCarville Monday found there was probable cause for the case to proceed and bound the defendant over for arraignment and possible trial. The arraignment will be next Monday in front of Judge Tim Chambers.
