A chance to tap into the natural gas emanating from one of the largest oil fields in the lower 48 states is prompting OneOk to expand its refining and loading facilities in the area. OneOk is building a new loading platform at its hydrocarbon plant in South Hutchinson and plans to greatly expand the rail loads in the future.

According to Brad Boyer of OneOk, the company is trying to tap into the huge gas reserves coming from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota. That gas is currently being burned off without use, so OneOk and other similar companies are rushing in to collect that gas, then refine it into other usable forms such as propane.

The loading site includes four rail spurs that will tie into the BNSF Railway, and loading stations. No word on when the loading dock will be fully operational. The project is part of OneOk’s plan to spend more than 3 billion dollars over the next three years to expand its natural gas and gas liquids operations.
