HAVEN, Kan. — An open house is set for Thursday evening at the Haven Community
Center for a proposed wind farm to be located near Cheney Reservoir.
NextEra Energy is proposing a new wind farm for Reno County and looking for public input. The open house will provide information on the project. NextEra will be on-hand to answer any questions landowners or others may have for the project.
The project — dubbed “The Silverlake Wind Energy Center” — would be a 200-300 megawatt facility located about eight miles south and east of Haven. NextEra approached the county three years ago asking about zoning issues and other legal matters, but never pursued the matter further until now.
It’s the most traction a wind farm has gained in the county since 2010 when a Texas company called “Horizon Wind Energy,” based in Houston, proposed a wind project in the county only to pull the plug when it could only reach agreements to lease about 1,000 of the 10,000 acres of land needed.
The open house and public meeting run from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in Haven.
