DERBY (AP) – A Derby couple is enjoying the holiday season at their home, 10 months after both of them were paralyzed from the chest down in a traffic accident.
Chuck and Marilyn Powell returned to their home on Wednesday. They both suffered spinal cord injuries on Feb. 17 when their motorcycle hit a patch of sand that was put down to prevent winter accidents. The husband and wife, both 63 years old, were on their way to dinner in Douglass.
The Wichita Eagle reports that the Powells were wearing full motorcycle gear, including helmets.
While Chuck and Marilyn recuperated, family, friends and neighbors remodeled their home so the couple could use their wheelchairs.
They say being able to be home for the holidays was the best Christmas present ever.
