HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Once again, local law enforcement will gather to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The National Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony is set for this Friday at 11 a.m. in front of the law enforcement center in Hutchinson. The ceremony will begin with opening statements from Sheriff Randy Henderson, followed by the invocation from Pastor Willard Stafford. The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Brigadier General Anthony Mohatt, Assistant Adjutant General of the Kansas Army National Guard.

His speech will be followed with recognition of the fallen officers and the playing of taps by Chase Schwein of Buhler High School.

Officers who have lost their lives in Reno County in the line of duty are: Reno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a burglary suspect in 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot while investigating liquor crimes in 1972.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the Veterans Room in the basement of the courthouse.
