A portion of the east side of Main Street at 2nd Avenue is closed as building inspectors continue their investigation of whether there is any danger to the public after several bricks fell from the roof of the Oppenheimer building over the weekend.

Authorities were alerted Saturday morning after several pieces of brick, that Hutchinson Fire Department Battalion Chief Darin Gehring said were about the size of a baseball, fell to the sidewall on the Main Street side of the building. Gehring says it appears some tin trimming may have moved pushing the brick away from its location. The pieces were not part of the buildings large limestone structure but from a place on the roofs edge.

Inspectors were going through the building again Monday to see if any major structural problems exist. The building has undergone extensive repairs since a fire cause heavy damage to the back of the building several years ago. However, Gehring says that right now it appears that the fire had little to do with Saturdays incident but again, said the investigation continues.
