Prairie Fire North of Hutchinson Monday Turned Out To Be Fairly Minor

Plum Street was closed north of Hutchinson for about an hour Monday afternoon on the report a prairie fire in that area, but was never a threat to travelers along that road.

Fire officials say it burned maybe 15-acres and two structures were in the path of the fire, but didn’t get close to them.

The fire was several football fields west of Plum Street according to fire officials and because it was in hilly and extremely thick brush, you really couldn’t see any flames, mostly smoke.

Plum was closed from 82nd to 95th, more so fireman could get their equipment into the area without having to fight traffic.

Fire crews tried to work quickly to get the fire out and the road open before school traffic began coming through that area.

The fire was reported to Reno County Fire District 3 around 2 p-m, and Hutchinson Fire crews were called into assist right after that.

Emergency Management Director Bill Guy says it could have been much worse. Luckily, winds were calm through most of the day which meant fighting the fire was much easier.
