SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. – An 89-year-old man was killed just after 6 a.m. Wednesday morning when his vehicle was struck by a semi on U.S 50 and Valley Pride Road.

According to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Kenneth Lee Batchelete, 61, of Butler, Mo., was eastbound on US 50 in his semi and struck a vehicle driven by Donald R. Schardein of Partridge.

Both victims were trapped in their vehicles, but fire crews were able to free both men.

Bachelete was transported by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for his injuries while Schardian was pronounced dead at the scene about a mile west of South Hutchinson.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
