Reno County Beginning Process For Building New Jail

Reno County Jail

As the county gets closer to breaking ground for a new jail on the southeast side of the city, they are now starting to go through the different processes with the city of Hutchinson in order to move forward.

Tuesday, the Hutchinson Planning Commission is expected to take up a conditional use permit for the correctional facility to be located in a Public and Institutional District. There is alsoa public hearing on the permit scheduled for October 15.

The Hutchinson Joint Subdivision Committee had scheduled take up the preliminary plat and final plat for the jail. However, there is a motion to continue that because of additional information needed to approve them. The meeting is scheduled Wednesday at the Fire Command and Training Center at 3201 East 4th.

The jail will be built on the northeast corner of Severance & Blanchard. Voters approved a half cent sales tax to build the jail and also move some county offices to what is currently the Reno County Jail Annex. Plans also include adding a new entrance to the courthouse and doing some improvements to the Law Enforcement Center.

The projected cost of all of this is around 29-million dollars.
