HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Reno County Commission made quick work of all the items on their agenda, with the exception of changing the procedure and policy on prayer at the meetings. Although briefly discussed, they are still working on the language on the proposal. That issue is expected to be made final next week. A U.S. Supreme Court decision is the reason for the change which would include sectarian and non-sectarian prayers.

And as expected, they gave final approval for the Edward Byrne Memorial Jag Program grant of $28,360.00 which will be split between Hutchinson Police and the Reno County Sheriff’s Office who will receive $8,791.00, while police will receive the rest.

Commissioners also approved a Reno County Health Department agreement with the Kansas Health Foundation for a healthy living grant for $94,530.00 which would be effective June 1 2014, through May 31, 2016. The grant is for intervention to implement systems change in child care facilities and centers in the county in preventing child obesity.

The commission also approved an agreement for engineering services between the county and BG Consultants. The agreement would be effective starting June 1, and running through May 31 of next year. The agreement provides the county with consulting services through the year. There was about a 2% increase in rates according to Public Works Director Dave McComb.

And commissioners approved the agreement with Union Pacific Railroad for the railroad grade crossing closures at West Greenfield Road and K-61, and South Sylvia Road & K-61.

Sheriff Randy Henderson told the commission that four of his deputies were given awards in Topeka recently for their excellent service and duty. Chris Massingill was honored for his work in helping to save the life of a man who had been shot by his girlfriend in eastern Reno County. The other three were honored for their assistance with a standoff situation in Wichita.
