HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 28-year-old man was sentenced Friday to nine months in prison, but then granted a year of probation.

Michael Rinebold was originally charged with abuse of a child, but the state decided the case involving a then 5-year-old boy didn’t rise to the level of abuse. The state, as part of an agreement with the defendant, dropped a second charge of misdemeanor battery.
The case started when school officials notified authorities the child had bruising and abrasions on his face. The child also suffered a black eye. The crime occurred on Nov. 15, 2017.
