HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Wichita West took advantage of Salthawk fumbles to spoil the Hutchinson Salthawks season opener at Gowans Stadium Friday night 38-14.

Just about before fans got settled in their seats Wichita West scored 3 touchdowns in the first 7 minutes of the first quarter to lead 21-0.

The Pioneers quarter back Jermain Brown scored from 11 yards out, then Quitan Sanders stripped the ball out of the Salthawks hands to score for a 25 yard sprint to the end zone on the first play of the Salthawks 2nd possession.  Jomarion Nelson scored on a 69 yard run on the first play on the next Wichita West possession.

Hutchinson trailed at the half but scored 2 td’s to pull within 28-14.

West tacked on a 37 yard field goal and a late 4th quarter touchdown to make the final score 38-14, Wichita West with the win.

Hutchinson will travel to Maize High School next Friday for a key AVCTL game.
