Kansas Republican Senator Jerry Moran is taking exception to a U-S Department of Agriculture newsletter suggesting that employees of that department not eat meat on Monday’s, instead eat vegetables on that day.

He accuses U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and his department of demonizing the consumption of meat at a time when he states our nation’s food and livestock producers are struggling under the worst drought since 1956.

He doesn’t like the fact that the USDA’s Office of Operations encouraged employees to participate in “Meatless Mondays” while dining in USDA’s cafeterias. He says the update went on to attack the production of meat in the U-S, saying the production of beef has “a large environmental impact,” and called on USDA employees to “help yourself and the environment” by not eating meat once a week.

Senator Moran wants them to reconsider their position because of the enormous economic impact meat has on states like Kansas.

The USDA’s newsletter, which was on their website has now been removed possibly in light of the Senator’s comments.
