HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 49-year-old man was in Reno County District Court Monday for a first appearance involving the burglary of a property owned by Interfaith Housing in Hutchinson.

Bradley Shafer faces charges of burglary, theft, criminal damage and two counts of making false information.

Shafer is accused of breaking into the building on West 20th and stealing numerous copper pipes from the building. In the process, he caused a substantial amount of structural damage to the building, according to statements made in court.

The copper had a value of $6,000 and the structural damage was $5,000.

He’s accused of taking the copper to Midwest Iron on three occasions. Shafer signed papers claiming the copper was his. The first time, the weight was 87 pounds, the second, 115 pounds and the third, 282 pounds.

He’s been on community corrections for a theft case from 2015.

His bond was set at $10,000.
