FRANKFURT, Germany – Strong numbers in their wind energy segment allowed Siemens AG to raise  its profit forecast after earnings for its core businesses jumped 20 percent to €2.2 billion ($2.4 billion) during the most recent quarter.

The company said Thursday new orders rose 6 percent to €21.1 billion. Orders for wind energy increased by more than 200 percent to €2.7 billion and revenue increased by 22 percent. Profits in the wind segment increased by 178% to €143 million.

The numbers do not reflect Siemens recent merger with Spanish wind company Gamesa which should be finalized in November.

The merger will make Siemens the largest wind turbine maker in the world.
