GREAT BEND – The Fire Department in Great Bend is investigating a structure fire that occurred early Thursday morning that was also housing a number of vehicles.

Great Bend Fire officials are estimating the extent of damages to be in excess of 750-thousand dollars.

Fire Chief Mike Napolitano told the Great Bend Post that because the landfill was closed Wednesday, two of the trucks parked in the structure were still full of trash, and the compost in those trucks were still burning through late Thursday morning.

Matt Eschleman is with Cliff’s Commercial Trash Service said they lost two trucks in the fire, while Estes Trash Service lost three. The stucture near the Great Bend Airport is where the two trash services housed their trucks.

Eschleman said they do have one other truck that was not in the structure, so they were going to try to perform their regular services Thursday. He says they’re scrambling to find other trucks they can use to help perform their services.

The fire reported around 12:27 a-m Thursday morning and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
