HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 54-year-old Hutchinson man facing trial for the armed robbery of Dollar General back in October of last year was found in contempt of court after an outburst in front of Judge Tim Chambers.

It came during a discussion over an attorney for Leroy Randall. His attorney Sam Kepfield had filed a motion to withdraw because he and Randall had disagreements over how to proceed. Kepfield was told by his client that he might file an ethics complaint against him. Apparently there have been other attorney’s assigned to the case prior to Kepfield. Judge Chambers denied that request and that led to an outburst from Randall accusing his attorney of acting like a prosecutor. Judge Chambers and the defendant were in a shouting match at one point until deputies removed him from the courtroom.

Judge Chambers indicated that he will set a hearing within the next week or so to see how they will proceed. Kepfield later indicated to the judge that Randall may want to represent himself.

Randall is charged with two counts of kidnapping, one count of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault.

The case starts with a store employee reporting that she heard a knock at a back office door. Thinking it was the other employee she was working with, she opened the door and a black male came in the store, stuck a gun in her face and demanded money. She screamed, causing the other employee to come out of the bathroom. Randall then allegedly pointed the gun at him as well. Both testified at the preliminary hearing to being scared. In fact, one thought that when the gunman took them to the bathroom and made them lay face down, that he was going to shoot them.

During the robbery, Randall allegedly got away with over $5,480.

The trial was scheduled to begin next week, but again that will be continued. Randall remains jailed on a bond of $125,000.
