Suspect allegedly pointed handgun at trooper during traffic stop

TOPEKA – The Kansas Highway Patrol has now identify the suspect who pointed a gun at a trooper during a traffic stop, then led the trooper in a chase. Once the vehicle was stopped, suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Suspect is 28-year-old Joshua Hance, . It’s unknown at this time where Hance is from. He has been booked into the Jefferson County Jail, as that is the county in which the incident began. Charges are still being determined at this time.

It started around 1:30 p-m, Monday afternoon, when a trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding at 90-miles-per- hour in a 70-mph zone in Jefferson County. The initial traffic stop was made on U.S.-24 Highway near the town of Grantville. While the trooper was in his vehicle completing paperwork, Hance allegedly backed up the vehicle he was traveling in, and pointed a handgun at the trooper.

Hance then allegedly then took off at a high rate of speed, entered Shawnee County, and exited to Sardou in the Oakland area of Topeka (near Billard airport). During times in the pursuit, the suspect avoided stop sticks, but another trooper blocked the road, and the suspect ran into his vehicle, ending the pursuit at Sardou and Oakland. Officers took Hance and a female passenger into custody, however again she has been released and will not be charged.

The Topeka Police Department worked another crash related to this incident, after a vehicle was run off the roadway by the suspect vehicle. It’s standard procedure to have another department work a crash or other incident that may be related to an event the Highway Patrol is involved in.

No officers were injured during the incident.
