FAIRWAY (AP) – Emma Sullivan says she was prepared for negative comments when she returned to school after a weekend in which a disparaging tweet she made about the Kansas governor became national news.
What surprised her Monday was that the criticism came from schoolmates, while teachers seemed to support her 100 percent.
The Shawnee Mission East senior tweeted Nov. 21, while at a student function at the Statehouse in Topeka, that Gov. Sam Brownback “sucks.” The governor’s office saw the tweet and forwarded it to her school within hours of its posting.
Sullivan says she was told to write an apology letter to Brownback, but decided against it. Instead, Brownback apologized Monday for overreacting. Her school also issued a statement saying she didn’t have to write the letter.
