HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After officials with USD 308 became aware of a possible threat last Wednesday at Hutchinson Middle School–8, two teens from that school were charged by the state.

The teens, 13 and 14, are charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated battery, according to Assistant District Attorney Daniel Gilligan. He adds that one of the teens is also charged with two counts of criminal possession of a firearm for having two handguns and a shotgun.

Gilligan said the two students were actively considering a school shooting. One decided he didn’t want to follow through with the plan, so the other asked for the guns so he could do it himself.

The two teens were picked up last Wednesday night. One will have a hearing this Friday.

Apparently, a student contacted building staff after reading a private message on social media. Hutchinson Police investigated the threat and detained the students involved.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old Nickerson student is also facing a charge of making a criminal threat at the high school last Thursday.

His case is also going through juvenile court.
