TOPEKA – Someone who bought a Powerball ticket in Northeast Kansas for last night’s drawing will lay claim to Kansas’ first Match 5 $1 million prize under the game’s new prize structure. Prior to January 15, 2012, Powerball players who matched all five white-ball numbers won $200,000, but, under recent game enhancements, that prize is now worth $1 million.

“We are so excited to have our first million dollar Powerball winner just days after we sold a record jackpot Mega Millions ticket. I keep saying ‘real people really win’ and the recent luck here in Kansas is proof. We can’t wait to greet our newest millionaire,” said Dennis Wilson, executive director for the Lottery.

In 2011, Kansas sold 10 Match 5 winning tickets for the then $200,000 prize. Wilson added, “If we would have awarded $1 million for every Match 5 in 2011, there would have been 10 additional millionaires in Kansas last year.”

Last night’s winning numbers were 1-24-33-45-49 and Powerball 6.

Key features for the new game are starting jackpots that doubled from $20 million to $40 million and a cash second prize that quintupled from $200,000 to $1 million. The Power Play option is still available for an extra $1 per play. Instead of randomly multiplying prizes by two to five times, Power Play now moves each prize level up by a set amount. The top prize of $1 million is doubled to $2 million and the $10,000 prize quadruples to $40,000. All other prizes are also increased (with the exception of the jackpot).

Powerball is played in 42 States, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
