One of the three men arrested in association with the alleged kidnapping and beating of a Nickerson man was supposed to make a court appearance Tuesday morning. But, Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen never received the paper work nor any affidavit from the Sheriff’s Office for Jeremia Palmer. So when he will appear is unknown, possibly tomorrow.
Palmer was arrested on Monday after a brief standoff with sheriff’s officials at his home at 311 South Cheney in Nickerson. He was finally taken into custody without incident.
The other two suspects were arrested Sunday evening after the Sheriff’s office and Hutchinson Police served a search warrant at 8 N. Heath in Nickerson. That is where the more serious charges are alleged to have occurred. The search warrant was based on a report filed by 28-year-old Larry McVey of Nickerson, about being kidnapped and beaten on Thursday. After an investigation the search warrant was served.
28-year-old Jedrik Smith, of 1400 North Ford is facing possible charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated robbery, and criminal threat. His bond set at 147-thousand, 500-dollars.
29-year-old Zachary Lawson is charged with aggravated kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, criminal threat, possession of drugs, possession of meth and marijuana. His bond set at 137-thousand 500-dollars.
Jeremia Palmer, of 311 S. Cheney, in Nickerson was arrested on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, attempted aggravated robbery, and criminal threat, as well as a warrant for a prior criminal threat bond is set at 143-thousand, 500-dollars.
Smith and Lawson made first appearances Monday afternoon via a video connection with the jail, and both will be back in court on September 21. Palmer is scheduled for a first appearance Tuesday morning.
Sheriff officials still have not released exactly what took place, but we do know all of the incidents other then the drugs occurred Thursday, and the drug charges are a result of when Smith and Lawson were arrested.
Smith already has a case pending for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and theft.
It started around 4:45 a-m Thursday morning, July 5 when officers were dispatched to the Kwik Shop at 43rd and Plum regarding the theft of gas.
The description of the vehicle was relayed to other officers and one of them spotted the vehicle traveling northbound on Plum. That officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 500 block of Idlewild. Smith was allegedly in possession of a firearm which prompted the officers to draw his weapon and issue verbal commands to him. He apparently ignored the verbal commands and began to drive away. Another officer providing assistance became entangled in the driver’s side door jam as the Smith drove away. As a result, the assisting officer was dragged a short distance causing injuries to his arm, leg and head. The original officer fired their weapon at the suspects car. Smith was not injured and continued to flee.
A short time later, a Reno County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspects vehicle and pursued it to an area of the 6000 block of North Lorraine. Smith alleged drove toward the deputy. The deputy fired upon Smith’s vehicle. Neither Smith nor the deputy were injured.
Smith continued to flee and led officers to the area around the 4000 block of North Plum. Smith then wrecked his vehicle in a ditch and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later in the area northwest of 38th and Severance.
He has been free on a 25-thousand, 500-dollar bond and Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton told the court Monday afternoon that he has already filed a motion to revoke his bond in that case.
