MAIZE – A 3-year-old was killed and his 9-month-old sister is hospitalized with critical injuries following a two-vehicle collision near Maize on Thursday.
Dyron Schutte and Drianna Schutte were both taken to Via-Cristi St. Francis Hospital, where Dyron Schutte died from his injuries. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says both children apparently were riding in car seats. The little boy was still in his car seat when he was thrown from the minivan.
The crash occurred at 119th Street and 53rd Street North, between an oil tanker truck and a minivan driven by the children’s mother happened around 12:30 p-m, Thursday near Maize.
The sheriff says investigators believe the minivan ran a red light and was hit by the Kensworth tanker truck, which was carrying very little oil. The minivan was pushed into a utility pole, and the truck tipped onto its side.
The children’s mother, 30-year-old Diana Schutte was also injured and taken to St. Francis in serious condition. The driver of the truck, 62-year-old Perry White was not injured
