TOPEKA (AP) – Students at Washburn University in Topeka are creating a temporary tent city as an art installation to raise awareness about hunger.

The installation opens Monday and will remain on display through Nov. 21 on the lawn east of the school’s University Memorial Union.

No one will live in the tents, which Washburn describes as non-functional sculptural shelters and other structures. They’re made out of found and recycled materials, including fabric,
cardboard and scrap wood.

The installation is in response to National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Text and images on the structures and accompanying signs will talk about hunger and homelessness in Topeka and the nation and throughout the world.

People who visit will be encouraged to donate food.
