HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a 55-year-old man charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and failing to register as a sex offender continues in Reno County District Court.

Richard Dean McHenry is accused of having inappropriate sexual encounters with the victim in April of 2016. The state claims the encounters were forced and the defense contends they were consensual.

The victim was on the stand Thursday afternoon where she described how, after he was released from prison, her family helped him get a job at a dairy near Pleasantview and how he became a part of her family. She also again described the sexual encounters, one that happened when she came to his home to get some of her belongings. During that encounter she was kicked and then sexually assaulted. She also claims it happened on another occasion and that was also forced.

Alyssa Davidson with Horizons Mental Health Center was also on the stand to testify about McHenry seeking services for depression and anxiety in association with the relationship with the victim, although he never mentioned any of the things he’s accused of doing to the victim.

The victim’s parents were also on the stand Thursday and testified of their knowledge of sexual encounters and other events that led to his arrest. They had apparently gotten to know McHenry very well and often invited him to their home.

The parents were also asked what they knew about McHenry’s previous conviction for aggravated criminal sodomy in Jefferson County. The victim’s mother told the jury that she was told by McHenry that his ex-wife fabricated a story about him.
