Once again, the trial for a 37-year-old inmate accused of attempted second degree murder has been continued. This time, the trial for DaJuan L. Wilkerson was continued at the request of the state. It was scheduled to begin Tuesday in front of Judge Tim Chambers.

Wilkerson is charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery on a state correctional officer and trafficking contraband into a correctional facility. The charges stem from a July 6, 2010 attack on William Kendall, a former sergeant at the prison. He suffered severe injuries when Wilkerson beat him with his hands and feet. Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton says he believes the defendant intended to hurt the officer severely and did. The officer had to retire from his position because of his injuries.

Stanton says that they need to investigate one the states witnesses, that’s the reason for his request for a continuance. He says this is the first time the state has requested a continuance while the defense has had 6-continuance since the preliminary hearing.

Wilkerson is currently serving time for murder in the first degree and attempted murder in the first degree for crimes in Sedgwick County going back to September 13, 2001.

No new date has been announced for the trial to continue.
