UPDATE: May 4 (6 p.m.)

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 60-year-old man who showed up at City Hall with a weapon yesterday made an initial court appearance Friday.

Johnny Klassen was arrested Thursday after employees called 911 and reported an armed subject.

Klassen entered city hall and asked to speak with a department head about his water bill. Klassen said he wanted to pay the bill.

When officers arrived, they discovered Klassen left westbound on a bicycle. Authorities intercepted him and saw the gun slung over his shoulder. Originally thought to be an assault rifle, officers say the weapon was actually a pellet gun. Officers ordered him to lay the gun down; he did.

Klassen was taken into custody. Police searched his backpack and discovered small amounts of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Klassen was arrested for drug possession and disorderly conduct.

He is jailed on a $6,100 bond. Klassen should be back in court next week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Just after 1 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to City Hall on the report of an armed subject.

Upon arrival, officers saw a man with what appeared to be an assault rifle. Sixty-year-old Johnny Klassen was taken into custody. Officials discovered the weapon was actually a pellet gun. Klassen apparently wanted to talk with a department head because he was upset about a bill.

Klassen was also in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. In addition, he was arrested for disorderly conduct.

No one at City Hall was injured, but it caused quite a commotion.
