HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson School District is asking students to refrain from using a certain type of cologne or deodorant after it caused a severe reaction to one of its students on several occasions.

The cologne in question is Axe, which is widely popular among students, but has been known to cause health issues in some students. One of them is Tori Lehr, who is a student at Hutch High.

Tori’s Mother, Teresa Lehr, gave us permission to talk about this matter in hopes it will get the word out about the use of Axe. Tori’s contact with Axe has caused a severe neurological reaction, which has caused Tori to lose muscle control and faint. This has happened on several occasions. It is not an allergic reaction, but a neurological episode.

There have been other cases of allergic and asthmatic reactions from those who have come in contact with the spray, including a Pennsylvania boy who must be home schooled. Axe does not fully disclose its ingredients, but it does contain several chemicals that can be harmful including butane, Isopropyl Myristate which is used to kill head lice. Another ingredient in the spray is Aluminum Tetrachlorohydrex Glycine, which can cause neurotoxic effects in humans. Of course any spray that a person inhales on purpose can be life threatening.

The district was sending a message asking parents to stop their children from using Axe spray if attending school and to wash clothing that may have Axe residue on them. The district is asking for students to show compassion in this matter.
