WICHITA (AP) – A new report says last month’s record high temperatures helped spur development of the Kansas wheat crop.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday the crop is three weeks ahead of the same point both last year and the five-year average.

The agency says about 61 percent of the wheat is now jointed, compared with 19 percent at this time last year and the five-year average of 21 percent. The crop is even farther along in south-central Kansas where 87 percent is now jointed.

Wheat condition improved over the past week, with 11 percent rated as excellent, 49 percent as good and 32 percent as fair. About 8 percent is in poor to very poor condition.
