Water levels at Cheney Lake continue to fall as the dry weather and water usage by the city of Wichita have left the lake 4 feet below normal level.
As of Thursday morning the lake level was at 1417 feet. Normal lake level is 1421 feet. According to officials with Cheney State Park, the lake is falling about 3/4’s of an inch each day. While the evaporation of the lake is slowing with the cooler weather the draw down from Wichita is increasing due to the dry conditions.
The low water level has closed all but one of the parks boat ramps and even that one is getting hard to navigate. The lake also suffered five weeks under an infestation of blue/green algae keeping swimmers and skiers out of the water.
The advisory was lifted just in time for the labor day holiday.
