The weather did cause numerous accidents in counties where the snow and ice were a little more severe. In fact, our Salina and Hays newsrooms were advising people in their areas to please be careful because of the snow and ice, with numerous reports of roll over accidents in Saline, Ellis, Russell, and Ellsworth counties.

The only fatality reported by the Kansas Highway Patrol was actually in Lyon County and was not weather related.

That accident occurring on K-99 south of the town of Admire when a 47-year-old Eskridge man lost control of his vehicle and hit a culvert. Norman Shoemate was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

And another accident in Osage County sent a man to a Topeka hospital when he rolled his vehicle several times.

26-year-old Joel James Sobba of Ottawa wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when that accident occurred on K-268, 10-miles east of the town of Lyndon.

Other counties reporting fairly minor accidents include Pawnee, Ford, Russell, Scott, Meade, Trego, Saline, and Geary. Those accidents were worked by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
