The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team dropped their final two matches of the 2011 Caribbean Tan Classic on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Freshman Shayne Haley continued her solid play over the weekend with nine kills in a 3-0 loss to Missouri State University-West Plains (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) in the first match of the day.

Sophomore Jordan Rehm and freshman Jade Nelson had nine kills each, but Frank Phillips College countered with four players with eight or more kills as the Lady Dragons fell 3-1 (12-25, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25).

No. 14 Seminole State, Missouri State-West Plains and Jefferson College all finished the 2011 Caribbean Tan Classic with 4-0 records. Frank Phillips finished 3-1. No. 19 New Mexico State was 1-3 with Hutchinson, Pratt and Cloud County completing the weekend 0-4.

 WEST PLAINS RECAP

The Lady Dragons jumped out to leads of 11-4 and 16-11 in the first set against the perennial power Grizzlies, but West Plains overcame the early deficit to win the first set and eventually sweep Hutchinson.

West Plains scored seven straight to overtake HCC and outscored Hutchinson 14-6 to over the final 20 points to win the first set. From there, the Grizzly front row dominated and completed the week of the Lady Dragons.

Haley finished with nine kills, five blocks and two servce aces to lead the Lady Dragons. Rehm had five kills and sophomore Cassie Wiley added five kills. Emily Oberlin had four kills.

West Plains out-hit Hutchinson 33-28 and out-blocked the Lady Dragons 11-6.

Magda Zietek had 10 kills and five blocks to lead West Plains. Aerielle Edwards had eight kills, while Candyce Alexander added six.

 

FRANK PHILLIPS RECAP

Hutchinson dropped the first two sets to Frank Phillips, but come with inspired play from Nelson, Haley and Wiley to start what was hoped to be a comeback of their open from 0-2 down.

After winning the third set, the Lady Dragons had a 10-7 fourth-set lead, but Plainsmen middle blocker Jordan Moore took over the match as FPC closed out the match in four sets.

Moore finished with 14 kills, getting 11 over the final two sets and seven kills in the decisive fourth set to lead Frank Phillips College. Rebecca Moustapha added nine kills. Alyne Bianchi and Melissa Goncalves had eight kills each.

Rehm and Nelson had nine kills each to lead Hutchinson, which was out-hit 51-38. Freshman Kayla Karmazyn came off the bench for a season-high seven kills. Haley and Wiley added five kills each.

The Lady Dragons out-blocked Frank Phillips 13-6. Haley had eight total blocks, including two solo stuffs. Nelson had four blocks.

Hutchinson will play at Hesston College at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Yost Center in Hesston. The Lady Dragons play at Dodge City on Wednesday in a Jayhawk Conference match.
