TOPEKA – Westar Energy customers who own a house 10 years or older can now assess its energy efficiency through a new HomeAudit pilot program. For just $100, homeowners can have a professional $300 audit performed that will provide them with a customized Energy Conservation Plan. Participants are eligible to receive a $100 rebate on the cost of the audit if they provide receipts showing they implemented at least $100 in improvements recommended in the Energy Conservation Plan.
Whether a resident plans to stay in the home another 10 years or put it on the market, a professional home energy audit can pinpoint measures to take to optimize energy savings, improve comfort and enable Westar Energy to postpone power plant development to meet increasing demand. Additionally, a home energy audit can promote personal safety by identifying carbon monoxide in the home. Professional energy auditors estimate that 10 percent of the audits they perform reveal carbon monoxide issues.
To participate, Westar Energy customers must, own a single-family home that is 10 years old or older, mobile homes and apartments are not eligible to participate. You must have 12 months of continuous electric service at the home being audited, be a Kansas resident, not have participated in the Efficiency Kansas program, Westar’s Simple Savings program or the Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program. Have a home with two or fewer heating and cooling systems, agree to pay a $100 co-pay directly to the auditor at the time the audit is performed and agree to meet with a Westar Energy account manager within 30-days after Westar receives
the audit from the auditor,
A participating professional energy auditor applying expertise and precise measuring instruments typically can perform blower door testing to pinpoint air leakage and severity, show customers potential problem areas, assess present heating and cooling equipment’s efficiency, assess insulation, gather data to determine potential savings for each measure recommended and determine presence of carbon monoxide.
