HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Moisture in the area is helping with the winter wheat crop and a few warm days didn’t hurt as well. According to the latest numbers from the Kansas Ag Statistics Service, 43 percent of the wheat is in good to excellent condition, while 40 percent is average. Just 17 percent is in poor condition.

About 91 percent of the wheat is in the ground in south central Kansas and about 69 percent has fully emerged. Some replanting has taken place in the area because of flooding.

Soil moisture is still running ahead of normal. According to the numbers, top soil moisture is running 78 percent adequate and 19 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is running at 83 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.

The agency also reports that corn and bean harvest is running behind average mostly because of weather delays ranging from flooding to winter weather.
