KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Friday that a Wyandotte county-based immigration services company has been ordered to cease business activities in Kansas.

In a court order, Wyandotte County District Judge David W. Boal banned the company, known as Centro Migratorio, Inc., and Peoples Centro Migratorio from advertising, soliciting, performing, accepting payments for, supervising or in any manner conducting business in the State of Kansas. Centro Migratorio, Inc. formerly offered immigration and translation services.

“Companies that operate in the state of Kansas must follow all the consumer protection laws of our state,” Schmidt said. “Our office will not allow companies that engage in misleading or illegal activity to continue business practices.”

The Attorney General’s Office was investigating allegations of unauthorized practice of law and other deceptive practices related to the company’s immigration services business in violation of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act. The Attorney General’s Office sought the court order due to Centro Migratorio’s repeated failure to obey subpoenas issued to the business in the course of the investigation. The injunction will remain in place until the company substantially complies with the subpoenas issued.
