Doris Mae Schultz | 1922 – 2018 |

Doris Mae (Craft) Schultz, 95, of South Hutchinson, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born August 5, 1922, in rural Kinsley, to Leo Raymond and Martha Elizabeth (Ficken) Craft. Doris graduated from Kinsley High School in 1940, Kansas State University in 1947, and took additional college courses at Sterling College. She was a farmer and of the Episcopal faith.

Doris was a member of Alpha Delta Pi while at KSU, and also served as a housemother there during the 1980′s. She was a member of the local chapter of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization), Pratt Garden Club, Bishop’s Committee of the St Mary & Martha Episcopal Church in Larned. Doris also served on an advisory board to the Edwards County Extension Unit.

Doris is survived by: children, Freya Flick and husband John of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Fred Schultz and wife Diana of Great Bend, Carol Hoffman and husband Rick of Round Rock, Texas, Margaret Schultz and husband Mac Clepkens of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Melissa (Flick) Lounis, Valerie (Flick) Monroy, Erin (Hoffman) Caballero, Brandon Hoffman; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Naomi Jane (Craft) Browne; and the children’s father, Wayne Frederick Schultz.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Private family inurnment will take place in Prattsburg Cemetery, rural Stafford County, at a later date. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) or Grace Episcopal Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Nettie L. Jenkins | 1936 – 2018 |

Nettie L. Jenkins, 81, of Hutchinson, died April 10, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born June 13, 1936, in Cauthron, Arkansas, to William Frances Payne and Fannie (Honeycutt) Payne Johnson.

Nettie was a homemaker. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, quilting, and faithfully read her Bible every night before she went to bed. Known as ‘Grandma’ to everyone she met, Nettie was very selfless, always putting others ahead of herself. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Maize for almost 10 years.

On July 3, 1959, she married Roy ‘Gene’ Jenkins in Hutchinson. They shared 57 years of marriage before his death on February 23, 2017.
Nettie is survived by: children, Pamela East and husband Donald Patterson, Rusty Jenkins, Roy Jenkins and wife Tammy, all of Hutchinson; brothers, Donald Payne, Kenny Johnson, Mark Johnson; sister, Earlene Lee, all of Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and numerous brothers and sisters.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Dale Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

J. Robert “Bob” Smith | 1931 – 2018 |

U.S. VeteranJ. Robert ‘Bob’ Smith, 86, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was born June 27, 1931, in Hutchinson, the son of Ira T. and Nancy Laveeta (Good) Smith. On August 8, 1959, he married Sue Ellen Madden in Rusk, Texas.

He was a 1949 graduate of Hutchinson High School, a 1953 graduate of the University of Wichita, and a 1956 graduate of San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. Bob was a United States Marine, serving at the end of the Korean War in Japan. His memberships include: Trinity United Methodist Church, Doer’s Sunday School Class, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, and Hutchinson Kiwanis Club.

Bob belonged to the Boy Scouts of America, at the Trinity Methodist Troop #313. He continued serving in adult leadership roles in Scouting with his old troop as well as with his son’s pack and troop. His son and several grandsons have continued the scouting tradition in the family.
Bob spent most of his career in pharmaceutical sales at Pfizer with roles in Texas and Colorado achieving such accolades as Salesman of the Year. After retiring from Pfizer, Bob and Sue relocated back to Hutchinson where Bob worked with the former Johnson & Sons Mortuary as well as Elliott Mortuary before taking up residence with the Wesley Tower retirement community.

Survivors include: his wife, Sue, as well as; children, Steve and wife Julie of Naperville, IL, Susan Rapp and husband Ray of Bloomington, IL; grandchildren, Ryan Smith (Sarah) of Midland, MI, Colin Smith (Sarah) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nathan Rapp of Austin, TX, Merritt Smith of Bella Vista, AR, Nolan Rapp (Michelle) of Austin, TX, Millie Smith of Naperville, IL, Mallory Smith of Atlanta, GA, Beatrice Smith of Auburn, AL; and great-grandchildren, Holman, Sidney, and Winston Smith, Maycie, Adelai, Kael, and Aidric Smith, Emerson and Graysen Rapp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Gene.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium at a later date in May. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the church or Trinity’s Boy Scouts Troop #313, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Clarence Earl Whipple | 1934 – 2018 |

Clarence Earl Whipple, 83, died April 7, 2018, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born May 27, 1934, in Alamota, the son of Clarence J. and Cecil L. (Davis) Whipple.  Earl graduated from Beeler High School and served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958.  He was a lifetime farmer in both Ness and Stafford counties.  Earl was a member of Stafford Church of the Nazarene, serving as Sunday School bus driver, usher, treasurer, and member of the church board.

On July 6, 1955, he married Verna M. Duel in Ness City. She died July 5, 1998. On March 12, 1999, Earl married Norma L. Schoenthaler in Wichita. She died October 13, 2014.

He is survived by: daughters, Marlita Whipple of Oklahoma City, OK, Earlene Byler (Doug) of Asher, OK, Shirley Humes (Todd) of Hutchinson; sons, Douglas Whipple of Apache Junction, AZ, Danny Whipple of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Ray Whipple (Joyce) of Ness City, Terry Whipple (Kay) of Oakley, Ned Whipple of Russell; sisters, Gertrude Slagle of Ness City, Rosie Johnston of Las Vegas, NV, Lois Mauch (John) of Beeler, Peggy Young (Jeff) of Utica; step-daughters, Delana Meyer of Overland Park and Kathy Hall of Kingman; nine step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Dr. David Dubovich officiating. Burial will follow in the Stafford Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Betty Rae King | 1928 – 2018 |

Betty Rae (Gregory) King, 89, of Hutchinson, went to be with our Lord on April 7, 2018, at The Arbors, Hutchinson. She was born December 13, 1928, in Quincy, Illinois, to Alva and Virginia (Liniger) Gregory.

Moving from Parsons, Kansas, Betty lived in Burrton since her marriage to George. She attended the First Christian Church in Burrton. Betty and George shared together in their love of vegetable gardening and growing beautiful flowers, which they enjoyed sharing with their many friends and family.

On November 19, 1974, Betty married George A. King in Burrton. He died January 14, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Travis Proffitt.

Betty is survived by: daughter, Peggy Martinez of Wichita; stepsons, Rick King, Ron King and wife Brenda, all of Hutchinson; one granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Burrton Cemetery, Burrton, with Pastor Charles Kerr officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Burrton, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
