HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 16 Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team had one of its most-balanced offensive games this season with four players scoring 19 points or better on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons earned a needed victory to keep pace with Barton and Coffeyville in the Jayhawk Conference and to sweep the season series with Garden City, defeating the Broncbusters 92-82 at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons secured their 52nd 20-win season by improving to 20-4 overall and 16-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchison maintains its second-place tie with Coffeyville, just one game behind Barton in the league standings. Both the Cougars and Red Ravens won on Wednesday. Garden City falls to 15-9 overall and 11-9 in league play.
Hutchinson defeated Garden City for the 10th-striaght time for the 15th time in the last 16 games.
Sophomore J.J. Rhymes led Hutchinson’s balanced attack with 21 points, while sophomore Devonte Bando and freshmen Curtis Hollisand James Rojas had 19 points each.
Those four players helped offset the 30-point night of Garden City’s Kendale Hampton, who hit 7 of 14 from 3-point range.
With a first half that had seven lead changes and seven ties, the Blue Dragons led 39-37 at halftime. Hutch started the second half with an 8-0 run over the first 1 minute, 57 seconds of the second half to take charge. The Busters got the lead down to six with 16:01 to go, but the Blue Dragons answered every challenge shooting 53.3 percent in the second half making 20 of 26 from the foul line in the final 20 minutes.
Rhymes had 12 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. He was 9 of 18 from the floor and 3 of 5 from the foul line.
Bandoo hit 6 of 9 shots, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range and 4 of 4 from the foul line. Bandoo added six rebounds and four assists.
Hollis established a new career high with 19 points on 6 of 8 shooting and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. The seven free throws and his eight rebounds were also career highs.
Rojas had 19 points and nine rebounds on 6 of 8 shooting and 7 of 8 from the foul line.
Hutchinson finished shooting 47.6 percent (30 of 63), hitting 3 of 5 from 3-point range and 29 of 38 from the foul line. The Dragons out-rebounded Garden City 45-34 and had only 10 turnovers.
The Busters shot 42.2 percent (27 of 64), hitting 14 of 34 from 3-point range and 14 of 22 from the free-throw line.
Neither team had more than a five-point lead in the first half. A Rhymes’ jumper with 8:10 to play gave the Dragons a 24-19 lead. Garden City tied the game at 28 on an Elvis Harvey layup with 4:14 to play. The Dragons answered that challenge with a Bandoo 3-pointer on the next possession and regained a five-point lead with a Hollis jumper at the 3:27 mark to make it 33-28.
Garden City was able to whittle Hutch lead to two points when Hampton hit a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left in the have and the Blue Dragons led 33-31 at intermission.
The Dragons started fast and capped a 9-0 run in the first 1:57 of the second half with a Bandoo dunk to take a 47-37 lead. But Garden City kept within striking distance by hitting nine 3-pointers in the second half. A Harvey trey with 16:01 to play trimmed the Hutch lead to 49-43. A Theo Holliday 3-pointer made it 53-47, but Bandoo struck away from 3-point range to give the Dragons a 56-46 lead with 14:15 to go.
Leading 56-48, the Dragons used an 8-1 run to provide some distance. Rhymes scored in transition to give the Dragons a 64-49 lead with 10:54 to go. Hutch built its largest lead of 16 when Hollis hit a contested jumper with the shot clock running out for a 69-53 lead with 8:03 to go.
Hutchinson took care of business down the stretch despite Garden City hitting a couple of late 3-pointers. Hutchinson outscored Garden City 53-45 in the second half.
The Blue Dragons play host to Butler at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team suffered through its worst offense start this season and never recovered as the Garden City Broncbusters pulled off a 56-48 upset of the No. 14 Blue Dragons on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Garden City defeated Hutchinson for only the fifth time ever at the Sports Arena and won in Hutchinson for the first time since 2004.
The Blue Dragons fall to 20-4 overall and 16-4 in the Jayhawk Conference with Butler coming to the Sports Arena on Saturday. Garden City improves to 15-9 and 12-8 as the Broncbusters split the season series with Hutchinson for the first time since 2013.
Hutchinson fell behind 11-2 after one quarter, missing 12 of its first 13 shots of the game. The Blue Dragons made several runs to get the game back to a one-possession score. Hutchinson had 17 possessions in which a score would have tied for taken the lead and the Dragons went 0 for 17 in those possessions.
The Blue Dragons committed 21 turnovers and Garden City had a huge 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers. For the second time this season the Blue Dragons were out-rebounded (32-29) and the most glaring negative statistic for Hutchinson on Wednesday was 4 of 17 shooting from the free-throw line.
Garden City posted its fourth consecutive game of allowing less than 50 points in a game.
After their bad start to the game, the Blue Dragons shot 54.5 percent after the first quarter to finish at 41.3 percent for the game (19 of 46). The Dragons were 6 of 13 from 3-point range.
Sara Cramer tied her career high with 18 points, hitting 4 of 6 shots from 3-point range.
Dejanae Roebuck had her 10th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jada Mickens had eight points.
Jada Washington scored an opponent individual high against Hutch this season with 24 points on 11 of 17 free-throw shooting. Abigail Green was next with nine points.
Garden City shot 20 of 48 (41.7 percent), hitting 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 13 of 21 from the foul line. The Busters had 15 turnovers.
The Blue Dragons actually trailed 13-2 just one possession into the second quarter. Mickens hit a 3-pointer late in the second quarter to get within six points at 20-14 with 1:46 to play. The Busters scored the final three points of the half and Hutch trailed 23-14 – the Blue Dragons’ lowest scoring half this season – at halftime.
The Dragons started the second half with a 9-2 run and pulled within 25-23 after a Cramer 3-pointer with 7:09 to play in the period. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes before a Washington free throw with 5:04 left started a 6-0 Buster run to rebuild a 31-23 lead after a Washington three-point play with 3:46 to go. The Dragons made another run and pulled within 34-29 when Alicia Brown scored going to the hoop with 1:10 to play in the third. That was also the score heading into the final quarter.
A Cramer three-point play to start the fourth quarter got Hutch within 34-32 with 9:43 to play. After trading baskets made it 36-34 Garden, the Dragons had an opportunity to tie the game after a Brown steal, but Hutch committed its own turnover and Green hit a jumper for Garden City for a 38-34 lead with 7:53 to play. The Dragons later pulled within one at 41-40 after a Tia Bradshaw fastbreak layup with 3:38 to play. Garden City finished the game with a 15-8 run to earn the victory.
Mary Lavonne Fischer, 81, of Hutchinson, passed away peacefully Monday, February 5, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Mary was born June 21, 1936, in Turon. Mary joined Grace Episcopal Church and was an active member of the church until her passing. There, she met current husband, Bob Fischer, to whom she has been married to for more than 20 wonderful years.
Mary and her first husband, Stan Goble, successfully owned and operated Goble Upholstery for many years. Many of her customers became longtime friends. For thirty years, Mary worked in the Kansas State Fair office. She loved working at the fair and bringing her children and grandchildren every year.
Mary was known for her beautiful gardens. She knew tips and tricks to growing all kinds of flowers and vegetables and happily shared the information with anyone who asked. Her garden was praised by the city and local newspaper on several occasions.
Mary had a deep love for all sporting events. Later in life she enjoyed playing golf. She was often found playing in tournaments with friends at Carey Park Golf Course. She was an avid Blue Dragons fan and went to support the local team as often as she could, and could always be counted on to watch K-State games. Mary loved to attend her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school sporting events and cheer them on. As a young woman, Mary was an avid horse enthusiast and competed in several events. Mary was one of the founding members of the Circle 6 Saddle Club. She often went to horse shows to support her daughter and granddaughter in competition. She loved to see her great-granddaughter learning to ride horses and looked forward to watching her compete as well.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by: her husband, Robert Fischer; her children, Steve (Joy) Goble, Kurt Goble, and Debra (James) Pomerleau; step-children Susie (Steve) Cardwell and Scott Fischer; her grandchildren, Lori (Chad) Lawrence, Derek (Courtney) Goble, Lauren Goble, Daniel (Raychel) Modlin, Stacy (Tommy) Hornbeck, Andrew Goble, and Chelsea Goble; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Easton and Emmy Goble, Maya Lawrence, and Jonathan Modlin; and half-sister, Kay (Dan) Johnson.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, RK and Nellie Carey and her first husband, Stan Goble.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson with the Reverend Dr. J. Ted Blakley and the Reverend Larry Carver officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Richard N. ‘Dick’ Kallaus, 78, of South Hutchinson, died Monday, February 5, 2018, at his home. He was born December 12, 1939, in Parsons, the son of Raymond E. and Theresa L. (Collett) Kallaus. Dick graduated from Elkhart High School in 1958 and served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1968. He worked as a tool and die maker at Eaton for 38 years until his retirement.
On April 11, 1997, Dick married Elaine McQuade in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: son, Michael Kallaus (Angie) of Hutchinson; daughter, Cynthia Schmidt (Kenny) of Hutchinson; stepdaughter Jennifer Blevins (Arlan Newell) of Newton; grandchildren, Ryan Penner (Chelsea), Ashley Graf (Bryce Johnson), Michael Graf, Christopher Kallaus, Mollie Martinez (Travis); five great-grandchildren; brother, Don Kallaus (Pat) of Colorado Springs, CO; and sister, Colleen Kallaus of Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, with Chaplain Jeffery Jones officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Patricia J. “Pat” Conrad, 78, died February 4, 2018, at Hospice House. She was born December 12, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Wesley and Weltha (Winfrey) Swartzell.
Pat graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
On January 17, 1958, she married Leland Richard Conrad in Hutchinson. He died July 1, 2006.
Pat is survived by: son, Richard and wife Beatrice of Hutchinson; daughter, Brenda Heim and husband Michael of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jennifer, Brittany, Zackary, Nicholas, Crystal, and Trenton; and great-grandchildren, Jose, Lille, Rosa, Jamison, Mady, Logan, and Morgan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Edward Swartzell.
Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Tim Carey officiating. Doris Mae Poltera, 94, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, February 4, 2018, at Pleasant Hills Home, Hutchinson. She was born November 11, 1923, in Sawyer, to Ernest Samuel and Emma Mary (Miles) Swisher. Doris graduated Greensburg High School in 1941 and attended Washburn and Kansas State Universities.
On August 25, 1943, Doris married Robert L. ‘Bob’ Poltera in Kinsley. He died December 10, 2005.
Bob and Doris owned Poltera Implement Company, where she worked as bookkeeper for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and attended New Covenant Presbyterian Church. Doris was gifted with a wonderful singing voice and sang for numerous churches and organizations in the Greensburg and Hutchinson area. She was active in the Reno Choral Society, the Mother-to-Mother ministry at First Presbyterian Church, and volunteered at Hospice House. Doris also participated in several Bridge groups, was a member of the VFW, and was a former member of Altrusa International.
She is survived by: sons, Gary Poltera and wife Sue of Hutchinson and Ronald Poltera and wife Barbara of Winfield; daughter, Renee Poltera-Lewis and husband Brian of Bel Aire; grandchildren, Mark Poltera and wife Micala, Brenda Baize and husband Tyson, Carina Rebella with husband Sanjay, Ryan Miller, Dustin Miller, and Samuel Miller; great-grandchildren, Emma J Baize, Hudson J Baize, Lilly Poltera and Chloe Miller; two nephews; one niece; and several cousins.
Doris was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; brother, Clinton Swisher; sister, Donna Swisher-Lusk; and two nieces.

Everette F. Hayes, 96, of Hutchinson, died February 3, 2018, at Graber House in South Hutchinson. He was born November 19, 1921, in Virgil, Kansas, the son of Everette F. and Jessie (Evans) Hayes.
Everette was a 1939 graduate of Yates Center High School and 1947 graduate of the University of Colorado. On October 16, 1943, he married Margaret Jane Mathews in San Antonio, Texas. She died December 1, 2015.
Everette served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for many years as an insurance and real estate broker, and following his retirement, worked for the public schools as a custodian. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on the board for the Salvation Army and the Kansas Children’s Service League.
He is survived by: son, Tom of Hutchinson; daughter, LouAnn Mart and husband, Robert of Hutchinson; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his wife; parents; stepfather, James Campbell; and a sister, Lolita Baldwin.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jeff Slater officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Private family burial will be held at Fairlawn Burial Park. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at Elliott Mortuary. Ann ‘Margie’ Dunmire West, 53, of Hutchinson, died suddenly Friday, February 2, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born September 2, 1964, to Roy Charles and Mildred Marie (Gittlein) Dunmire.
Margie graduated from Buhler High School in 1984 and attended the University of North Texas. She worked at Greene Vision, Health E-Quip, and most recently at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as a medical biller. Margie loved to swim, play tennis, read and tend to her flowers.
On July 24, 2004, she married her soulmate, Mark Anthony West in Wailoa State Park, Hawaii. They were together 20 wonderful years, and married for 13 of those years. Annie, (as Mark called her), and Mark did everything together. They had plans for planting flowers in the back yard come spring, and had already purchased the seeds to plant. Margie was a loving and devoted wife, and a caring daughter and sister who will be greatly missed. She attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.
Margie is survived by: husband, Mark; father, Roy Dunmire, all of Hutchinson; and brother, Bob Dunmire (Amy Smolik) of Dallas, Texas.
She was preceded in death by: her mom, Mildred Dunmire; in-laws, Dorothy Mary Elizabeth (Shaw) West and Thomas James West II; and brother-in-law, Matthew Allen West.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Old Mission Cemetery, 3424 E. 21st N., Wichita, with Father Ned J. Blick officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
