Dragon Football still in Top 20

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Football Team remained in the NJCAA Rankings this week despite a second-straight loss to a nationally ranked opponent.

Last Saturday’s 24-19 loss to No. 6 Independence knocked the Dragons down four spots to No. 20 in this week’s rankings released on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-3 with all three losses coming to now-No. 1 Iowa Western, Butler, which is 10th this week and No. 5 Independence.

Iowa Western and Arizona Western remain Nos. 1 and 2 this week. East Mississippi, Northwest Mississippi and Independence rounds out the Top 5.

Four Jayhawk Conference teams are ranked this week. Garden City is ranked No. 17 this week.

After starting the 2017 season out of the rankings, Hutchinson has appeared in five-straight rankings.

The Blue Dragons will play Fort Scott at Noon on Saturday at Gowans Stadium before rounding out the regular season on Nov. 11 at Dodge City.

Carl S. Cook | 1943 – 2017 |

Carl Sherman Cook, 74 years, 6 months, 17 days, passed way October 27, 2017, in Hutchinson, KS., with family by his side.

Carl was born April 10, 1943 in Hutchinson KS. to Sherman L.  and Fern Pauline (Hamilton) Cook, and spent his life working as a mechanic.  He helped a lot of people with their cars, fixing them.  He always gave the praise to God for knowing what to do to fix the cars.

Carl was saved while living in Lubbock, Texas, and after moving back to Hutchinson rededicated his life to the LORD.  He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church for 21 years and everything he did was done for the LORD.

Carl enlisted in the United States Army on April 13, 1960 in Kanas City, Missouri and was honorably discharged on March 28, 1963 at Fort Hamilton, New York.  He spent most of his service in Germany.

On June 21, 1996 he married Shirley at Riverside Baptist Church in Hutchinson.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents Sherman L. Cook and Fern Pauline (Hamilton) Cook, and one brother Jimmy of Alabama.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of the home, one brother Don Cook Hutchinson; three sons,  Kenneth Cook Smith, MO., Fred Cook, Russell, and Randy Rhodes, Oklahoma; four  daughters, Paula Livingstone, Russell,  Lisa White, Hutchinson, Debbie Longwell, Missouri, and Rhonda Symonds, Texas; three grandsons Christopher, Justin, and Nathan and one grand-daughter Kiara White, along with a host of grandchildren,  great grandchildren, friends and relatives who will miss him.

The family wishes to extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to Kansas Land Tire employees for all their support during this time.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017 from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Service will be held Friday November 3, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church, 114 E. 8th Ave., Hutchinson, KS.

Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS.

In Lieu of flowers, accepting donations at Riverside Baptist Church or Hutchinson Funeral Chapel for funeral expenses.

Barbara Card | 1929 – 2017 |

Lorrine Barbara Jean Gray Card, 88, died on October 25, 2017 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 23, 1929 in Hutchinson to John Clinton Bowen and Maude Ann (Lonian) Bowen.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1947 and went on to attend Hutchinson Community College.

Barbara owned and operated a daycare; she was an Activity Director for Good Samaritan, a lifetime PTA member for USD 308, and a member of Bethel A.M. E.

Preceding her in death are her parents; two brothers; eight sisters; two husbands, Johnnie Gray and Leroy Card; a daughter Veronica Hankins and a grand-daughter, Ashley Hankins.

Survivors include seven children, John Bowen Gray, Richard (Gail) Gray, William (Jean) Gray, Tina Gray, Timothy Gray, Lori (James) Smith and Stanley Gray; 20 grandchildren; 73 great grandchildren; 39 great- great grand kids.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 3rd from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with family greeting 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday November 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.

Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502

Strong third quarter not enough for Dragons

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The final 1 minute, 51 seconds of the second quarter were key in putting the Hutchinson Community College football team in a 14-point halftime hole.

The Blue Dragons made a furious second-half rally, but the comeback fell just short as Independence took full control of the Jayhawk Conference title chase late Saturday night at Emmott Field.

B.J. Emmons ran for better than 100 yards, quarterback Eric Forrest provided a second-half spark and the defense made several huge stops, but the No. 16 Blue Dragons fell to the No. 6 Pirates 24-19.

The Blue Dragons fall to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk. Hutch now trails Independence, which won its seventh-straight game to improve to 7-1 and 5-0 in league play. The Pirates own a two-game lead on the field with two games to play.

Emmons ran hard all night and totaled 102 yards on 19 carries. DeShawn Waller had 45 yards on seven carries and Dezmon Jackson ran for 41 yards on five carries and a touchdown.

Forrest completed 5 of 11 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Jaylen Erwin had three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Dragons were out-gained 364 to 207. The Dragons had a negative-33 yards in the second quarter and just nine total yards in the fourth. Hutch ran for 149 yards but threw for 58.

Indy quarterback Malik Henry completed 18 of 33 passes for 210 yards. Rakeem Boyd rushed 26 times for a game-high for 149 yards.

Independence had 210 passing yards and 154 rushing yards.

Trailing just 7-3 in the latter stages of the second half, the Blue Dragons had the ball at their own 9 with 3:33 to play. Independence recovered a bad shotgun snap at the Dragon seven. Hutchinson’s defense made a huge stop keeping the Pirates out of the end zone, stopping the Pirates at the 3 on fourth down.

One play later, another bad snap forced Cam Jones to fall on the ball in the end zone for a safety and the Pirates led 9-3 with 1:51 to play in the half.

Independence took the ensuing free kick and marched 60 yards in five plays as Rakeem Boyd scored his second touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run with 25 seconds left in the half. With the two-point conversion, the Blue Dragons trailed 17-3.

The Blue Dragons inserted Forrest into the lineup to start the second half and he led the Blue Dragons on a nine-play, 77-yard scoring drive. Forest completed the march with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Erwin. Hutch trailed 17-10 with 10:35 to go in the third.

Independence immediately answered with a seven-play, 46-yard scoring drive capped by a Malik Henry 1-yard sneak and the Pirates regains a 24-10 lead with 7:52 remaining in the third.

The Blue Dragons made it a one-possession game again when their 7-play, 71-yard scoring drive was finished off by a Dezmon Jackson 21-yard touchdown run. The extra-point try clinked off the left upright and the Dragons trailed 24-16 with 4:34 to play in the third.

Luke Niemeyer added a 20-yard field goal; his second of the game, to pull Hutchinson within 24-19 with 1:24 to play in the third quarter, but that was a close as Hutchinson came.

The Blue Dragons will play host to Fort Scott next Saturday at Noon at Gowans Stadium.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — No. 16 Hutchinson faces No. 6 Independence in a contest that could determine the conference champion. Independence has not lost in conference play, while HutchCC lost its first conference matchup last week against Butler.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The only conference loss for No. 16 Hutchinson (6-2, 3-1) came last week to Butler. No. 6 Independence (6-1, 4-0) has yet to lose in conference play.

The winner of this matchup could very well win the Jayhawk Conference.

Saturday’s game is set to kick at 9:30 p.m. as the town of Independence celebrates Neewollah.
