John R. ‘Johnny’ Phillips, 62, died Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. He was born June 1, 1956, in Eureka, Missouri, to John R. and Mary A. (Hirl) Phillips, Jr.

He graduated from Haven High School in 1975, Emporia State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business on December 18, 1981, and his Masters of Business Administration on December 21, 1985. John proudly served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1980 and was honorably discharged.

John is survived by: long-time friend, Cindy Chinn of Wichita; dearly loved daughters, Dr. Jacquelyn Phillips, M.D. of Camarillo, CA, and Rachel Phillips of New York, New York; brother, Jimmy Phillips and wife Ann of Great Bend; sisters, Jeannie Prebble of Hutchinson, Mary Duncan and husband Tony of South Hutchinson, and Debbie Miller and husband Randy of Utah; and nephews, Robert and Jason Wiggins, both of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Mary A. (Hirl) Phillips.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Partridge Cemetery, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Douglas A. ‘Doug’ McConnell, 76, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. He was born May 11, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Harold and Helen (Rodine) McConnell.

Doug graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1960. He worked for J.S. Dillons/Kroger as a warehouseman for 42 years. Doug’s biggest hobby was playing horseshoes. He held multiple state championships, two in Kansas and one in Montana. In 1999, Doug won one of his five World Titles in Greenville, OH, and his second a year later in Bismark, ND. Doug also had the distinction of being inducted to the Kansas Horseshoe Pitching Association Hall of Fame in 2007. When he wasn’t throwing shoes, you could find him at one of his grandkids’ sporting events. It didn’t matter if it was an all day motocross event, softball tournament, or a late night circle track race; if the kids were in it, Doug was there. Some days he may have even squeezed in some fishing. Doug’s grandkids were his greatest joy.

On August 3, 1963, he married Mary Lou Worley in Hutchinson. They shared 55 years of marriage.

Doug is survived by: wife, Mary Lou McConnell of South Hutchinson; daughter, Yvette McConnell and husband Roger Newby of Hutchinson; sons, Jeff McConnell and wife Gina of Hutchinson, Troy McConnell and wife Casey of Wichita; brothers, Dale McConnell and wife Susan, Lorin McConnell and wife Barbara, and Larry McConnell and wife Betty, all of Hutchinson; sisters, Cheryll McConnell of Haysville, and Caryl Woerz and husband Alan of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Clay, Casey, Calli, and Cale McConnell; and great-grandchild, Cooper McConnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and JayDee McConnell.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Elliott Mortuary, with Dr. Roy Jaye officiating. Sally A. Salisbury, 65, of Hutchinson died June 7, 2018. She was born November 9, 1952, in Detroit, MI, raised by Fredrick Thomas and Marjorie Louise (Hundley) Wright.

She was a 1970 graduate of Hutchinson High School.

On March 12, 1971, she married Dale Eugene Salisbury in Miami, Oklahoma. He survives. Also surviving are: son, Fred and wife Tessy of Hutchinson; sister, Susan Wright of South Hutchinson; brother, Kris Chase of Missouri; nieces, Nikki Pauley and husband Amos of South Hutchinson, and Natelie Burkey and husband Jed of Nebraska; and one great-niece and three great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Richard Edgar Buzbee, 86, former editor and publisher of The Hutchinson News and Olathe Daily News in Kansas, died June 6, 2018.
Richard Edgar ‘Dick’ Buzbee was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Fordyce, Arkansas, to Edgar Andrew and Helen Koester (Darling) Buzbee. He attended the University of Arkansas and the University of Missouri, where he received degrees in journalism and political science and a naval commission.
Richard served in the United States Navy from June 11, 1954 to May 28, 1957, as a midshipman and officer aboard a battleship, a cruiser, an attack transport and a tank-landing ship.

He received a Department of the Army citation during the Vietnam War for patriotic civilian service. He was the chairman of four campaigns in Olathe to bring service members home for the Christmas holidays during that war. Richard also served as the chairman of both the Olathe and Hutchinson Chambers of Commerce and as president of the Johnson County Red Cross and the Hutchinson Symphony. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  Richard began a 35-year career in journalism with the Harris Enterprises newspaper group after leaving the Navy and worked in Chanute, Kansas, Burlington, Iowa, and then in Olathe and Hutchinson.

Richard was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, and was involved in the Doers Sunday School class.

He married his wife, Marie Palmer, April 16, 1955, in Waverly, Missouri.

Richard is survived by: his wife of 63 years, Marie; sons, William Buzbee and wife Monica of Half Moon Bay, California, James Buzbee and wife Judi of Centennial, Colorado; daughters-in-law, Sally Buzbee of New York City, New York, Julie Buzbee of Topeka; 10 grandchildren; and sister, Harriette Reap of Katy, Texas.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sons, Robert Buzbee and John Buzbee; granddaughter, Anne Marie Buzbee; brother, Robert Dale Buzbee; and sister, Joy Ayer.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Michael L. McGuire officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today until service time at Elliott Mortuary. Rochelle Marie ‘Chelle’ Davignon, 54, died June 5, 2018, at Stormont Vail in Topeka, with her family by her side. Rochelle’s earthly journey ended and she gained her perfect life with God in Heaven.

She was born June 16, 1963, in Hutchinson, to Leo and Lorna (Stevens) Davignon. Rochelle graduated from Trinity Catholic High School in 1982. She was a former member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, and a current member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Onaga. Rochelle loved God, her Catholic faith, her family, her country, and the KU Jayhawks. She delighted in her music, poetry, art, and creativity with her ‘family’ at Onaga Health and Rehab.

Rochelle is survived by: daughter, Carissa; siblings, Dan Davignon (Susan) of Lake Havasu, Arizona, Dana Harris (Mark), Judy Wilson (Jim), Patty Mazur (Jerry); 10 nephews and nieces; and 19 great-nephews and great-nieces.

Parish Rosary will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at Church of the Holy Cross, 26th and Plum, with Father Bob Pinninti officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Ned J. Blick officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Sandra Sue Kightlinger, 71, died June 4, 2018.  She was born June 20, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Morris and Neva Miller.

Sandra graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962 and attended beauty school.  She enjoyed painting and camping with her husband, Michael.

On December 27, 1967, she married Michael ‘Mike’ Kightlinger in Hutchinson.  They shared over 50 years of marriage.

Sandra is survived by:  husband, Mike of Hutchinson; nephew, Clayton Haselhort of Wichita; and mother-in-law Mary Meyer and her husband, Jim.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents; sister, Becky Haselhorst; and brother, Rodney Miller.

Cremation has taken place.  Per her request, there will be no service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.

Jeremy L. Edwards, 46, of Hutchinson, died June 4, 2018, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center, Via Christi St Francis Campus, in Wichita. He was born September 28, 1971, in Hutchinson, the son of John and Pam (Phipps) Edwards. Jeremy graduated from Nickerson High School in 1990. For ten years he owned and operated Streamline Performance motorcycle shop in Hutchinson before starting Faith Advisors insurance company. Jeremy was a member of Solid Rock Bible Church, South Hutchinson.

On March 24, 2014, he married to Cristen R. Hejera, in Las Vegas. She survives.

Other survivors include: daughters, Brittany Garner (Dakota) of San Deigo, CA, Cheyenne Edwards of Wichita, Maci, Presli, and Mykah Edwards, all of Lampe, MO; grandsons, Rylen and Jaylen Alford of Wichita; sisters, Vicky Schaff (Jessy) of Cheney, Tina Edwards of Hutchinson; grandfather, Marvin Phipps of South Hutchinson; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jeremy was preceded in death by his grandparents, James L. Edwards and Jewell Maxine Edwards and grandma, Julie Janette (Peggy) Phipps.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at Medora Community Bible Church, 8311 N. Medora Rd., Hutchinson, with Pastors Wayne Johnson and Lee Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Elliott Mortuary.
