RENO COUNTY — Four teens escaped serious injuries after being involved in a rollover accident just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Reno County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 6300 block of North Halstead Road for the accident after being advised the vehicle had rolled and there were individuals who were possibly trapped inside. That was not the case.

A small passenger car had come to a rest on its passenger side and four individuals were outside of the vehicle and walking around. They were identified as 16-year-old Payton McAllister, 17-year-old Justice Roberts, 16-year-old Madison Coen and the driver, 15-year-old Maximus Sublett. They all complained of minor injuries. They were all treated on the scene and then released to their parents or guardians.

Reno County EMS and Hutchinson firefighters assisted with the accident, which is still under investigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Angelo Palermo has been formally charged in a traffic case where he led law enforcement on a slow-speed chase on U.S. 50 back on Sept. 22.

Once stopped, Palermo was arrested for fleeing and eluding — his second offense — DUI — a third offense — driving while suspended, illegal transportation and failing to drive in the right lane.

During the slow-speed chase, he allegedly switched positions with the passenger, according to statements in court.

He finally stopped after pulling off the highway at Jordan Springs Road.

He’ll be back in court Oct. 17.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was back in May when District Judge Tim Chambers took under advisement a suppression motion by the defense in a murder case. The motion will decide whether statements made by 34-year-old Quinton Moore, who is charged with first-degree murder, should be allowed at trial.

No ruling has been made in the murder case, but that could come Friday.

In July, Judge Chambers said both sides wanted more time to submit additional briefs in the case over the suppression motion.

Moore is accused of shooting 42-year-old Clarence D. Allen multiple times in his head and neck while Allen slept at a residence at 1701 E. 30th in Hutchinson.

The defense contends he may have been under the influence of alcohol, but also that he may have asked for an attorney while being questioned on the day of the murder.

The case is scheduled for trial next week, according to District Attorney Keith Schroeder.

Moore remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For three days next month, the 11th annual Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run & Classic Car Show will fill the downtown area.

Visitors will be surrounded by some hot rods, street rods, rat rods, antique and classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and wrapped vehicles.

The 2018 event will feature the Oktoberfest BBQ and Craft Beer Festival, as well as the kid’s “All Wheels” show in Memorial Hall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission Tuesday agreed to send a letter of support for the K-96 highway improvements.

Originally, the work was proposed from Willowbrook to just north of Sterling, but that has apparently been changed to have it go all the way to Lyons.

The project was put on hold after the Kansas Department of Transportation decided that, because of funds taken from the department by the legislature for other uses, it had to postpone projects, including K-96 until a later time.

Apparently, a Joint Legislative Transportation Vision Task Force will be meeting to discuss the future of Kansas highways and potential projects.

The Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce plans to lobby for the K-96 project.

According to the letter being sent by the county, traffic using this corridor has increased and more growth is projected by 2035.

County Administrator Gary Meagher talked about the importance of this project:

 

Commissioner Dan Deming admitted that some in the Nickerson area are not in favor of the project because it will use some farm land. However, all the land needed for the project has been purchased.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Health Department officials say that some of the mosquitoes collected from traps in the county have tested positive for West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.

Throughout the summer, officials have coordinated efforts with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Biological Survey to trap and actively monitor the mosquito population.

West Nile virus is not contagious person-to-person, according to officials. Most people infected won’t have any symptoms. They say about 20 percent of people infected will experience mild symptoms such as a fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and vomiting. Less than 1 percent will develop severe illness that may require hospitalization.

Severe symptoms include neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, muscle weakness, numbness, paralysis, and even coma or death. If you develop any of these symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately.

St. Louis encephalitis is a rare disease that causes inflammation of the brain. Like West Nile virus, it’s not contagious person-to-person. In some individuals, especially the elderly, it can cause serious illness that affects the central nervous system.

Symptoms often include fever, headaches, stiff neck, disorientation and altered levels of consciousness. Coma, convulsions, and paralysis may also occur.

If you develop symptoms, seek medical treatment.

RENO COUNTY — A Wichita man was taken to the hospital after a one-vehicle accident in the county Monday evening.

Benjamin D. Creed of Wichita says he struck a deer in the 13000 block of East Longview Road.

He was wearing his seat belt and his airbags deployed.

He was transported by Haven EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for neck and leg pain.

The accident occurred around 7:40 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 43-year-old man was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia early Sunday after he called police for a disturbance at an apartment at 207 W. 11th.

Police discovered that Victor Sallabedra had a warrant for failing to appear on two more serious charges.

He’s charged with aggravated battery and criminal threat for a domestic case that occurred earlier this year.

The state alleges he tried to strangle the victim and also made threats of violence against her. He failed to show in court to hear the reading of those charges.

He’s jailed on a bond of $9,500. Sallabedra will be back in court Oct. 17.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — You may have noticed that gas prices went up in the last week. Hutchinson is not alone, Kansas was part of a regional trend that saw prices at the pump rise with the average cost for a gallon of regular gas rising four cents this past week. The average price across the state is at $2.70 per gallon.

The rate for regular unleaded in Hutchinson is much lower than that, however, prices did increase here as well. Most stations Monday are showing a price of $2.56 per gallon.

Prices in South Hutchinson are much higher, but still below the state average. Most stations are reporting a price of $2.69 per gallon.

According to AAA Kansas, this week’s Kansas gas price extreme is in Kensington in Smith County at $3.01 per gallon. The lowest price in the state is in Hutchinson and Newton at $2.56 per gallon.
