City levee system sprouts a few leaks, but otherwise holds up against flooding

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — They are still waiting for the water to fully recede, but Hutchinson Public Works says — for the most part — the city’s levee system held up to some of the largest flooding in more than 10 years.

City Engineer Brian Clennan says they will have to wait for the Arkansas River and Cow Creek to fully recede to completely inspect the levees.

Clennan says they did have some damage done to the levee on the South Hutchinson side when water began to flow through the dike around several 48-inch pipes that drain into the river. That area was repaired. Clennan also says several drainage gates that lead into the flood canal were blocked off by high water, which caused them to back up and damage a few areas. Clennan says the city used sand bags to hold the water in check in those areas.

As far as roads and bridges are concerned, Don Brittain of Reno County Public Works reports that one small bridge near Arlington had the road wash away at the approach. Other than that, Brittain says most damage is confined to township roads. The extent of that damage won’t be known for a few days while the water recedes and the roads become usable again.

Advance voting by mail begins Wednesday in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Wednesday begins the process of advance voting in Reno County. According to County Elections Clerk Jenna Fager, mail-out ballots go out today with in-person advance voting starting Oct. 22.

Fager says the clerk’s office continues to be very busy with mail-out ballot requests and registrations.

Fager says some of the activity can be attributed to a website called KSvotes. The non-profit site allows potential voters to register online. The site is not part of the secretary of state’s office.

All mail-out ballots must be returned to the clerk’s office by 7 p.m. election day or must be postmarked by that date. Those postmarked can be accepted until Friday, Nov. 9.

Town Club vote scheduled for Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — What has been part of Hutchinson for more than seven decades could officially come to an end Tuesday evening.

The 250 members of the Hutchinson Town Club will vote whether to close the club after 71 years.

The special meeting and vote comes after the announcement was made by the club last month that it would close pending the vote. If approved, the club would close its doors at the end of the month.

Club President Liz Peirce says the financial picture for the club and membership have been in decline. Its membership continues to increase in age and fewer younger residents want to join. Those who cannot be present will be able to vote by proxy.

The closing will also mean the loss of 16 jobs.

Voter registration closes Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tuesday is the last day to register to vote in the November midterm elections.

Registration has been busy in Reno County with the clerk’s office reporting that the number of registered voters has increased by 308 since the August primary. As of last week, there were 40,255 registered voters, which is more than 60 percent of the county’s total population.

Advance voting by mail begins Tuesday in the county. Residents will be able to vote in advance in person starting Oct. 22 at the Reno County annex. Two satellite voting opportunities will also be available. One is Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Hutchinson Community College. The second is Thursday, Oct. 25, at Wesley Towers. Both will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The county will be open for advance voting Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 at the annex from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The annex will also be open late for voting Oct. 30 until 7 p.m.

Advance voting will close Monday, Nov. 5, at noon. Mailed-out ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. Nov. 6 or be postmarked by that date.

Most county roads open; many township roads still closed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Roads northwest of Hutchinson are starting to open again as flood waters begin to recede along Cow Creek.

Reno County Public Works says these roads are now open:

56th from Wilson to Eisenhower

82nd from Yaggy to Pennington

82nd Avenue – Mayfield Road to Kent Road
85th Avenue – Old K61 Hwy to Mayfield Road
82nd Avenue – Yaggy Road to Wilson Road
Medora Road between 95th Avenue and 108th Avenue
Wilson Road between 56th Avenue and Willowbrook
Yaggy Road between 69th Avenue and 82nd Avenue

Many township roads are still closed because of high water and debris.

Buhler teachers tour manufacturing plants; talk future workforce

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During the summer, area manufacturing leaders, the Chamber, and area teachers and counselors got together for a town hall meeting to discuss how a better connection could be made between companies and schools.

On Monday, 50 teachers from the Buhler school district took tours of three local manufacturers to see what they do and learn what they look for in a workforce. The tours included Collins Bus, Kuhn Krause and Superior Boiler Works.

City Council to take action on sidewalk improvement project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will seek approval for an agreement to make sidewalk and drainage improvements along a building at West Avenue B and Main.

Fair City Folk Art, LLC, is currently in the midst of a $1.5 million renovation to the building on the southwest corner of the intersection. The work will add ground floor shop spaces and remodel the vast upstairs ballrooms into an event space.

As the project proceeded, the owners of the building approached the city to discuss the condition of the curb, gutter and sidewalk along West B Street to the alley. After meeting with the city manager, both parties agreed to complete the design drawings and put the project out for bid. Three bids were reviewed. Vogts-Parga Construction from Newton was the low bidder at $49,217.

If the council approves the proposal, the cost will be split with Fair City Folk Art, LLC, paying $13 ,745.90 for new sidewalk. The remaining balance of $35,471.25 will be paid by the city for repairs to the curb, gutter, alley approach and new drainage inlet.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Hutchinson City Council begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Hutchinson city offices.

Crusader golfers punch ticket to state meet

HESSTON, Kan. — For the Buhler golf team, it was worth the wait. After having the 4A regional postponed because of flooding at the Hesston Golf Park, the Crusaders slogged their way to a second place finish on Thursday.

Haley Miller led the way for Buhler with a third place score of 87. Lauren Specht finished in seventh with a 90 and Hayley Engellend was eighth with a 98. Kate McPherson finished 10th with a 105. Andale won the team title with a score of 342. Buhler carded a 380.

Buhler won’t have to go far for its trip to state. The 4A meet on Monday is at Carey Park.

Wildcats and Panthers run very wet CKL meet

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Haven and Nickerson ran at the Central Kansas League cross country meet held in Lindsborg. Neither Nickerson or Haven had a complete girls team. Nickerson was led by Nicole Moore, who finished in 20th with a time of 23 minutes, 30 seconds. Haven was led by Ryleigh Lacoy and Natalie Unruh who finished in 16th and 17th.

For the boys, Haven was led by Randon Richmond, who finished in 28th place. Owen Krehbiel was the lone runner for Nickerson. He finished in 41st on the day. The Haven boys team finished in fifth place in the team standings. Nickerson did not field a complete team.

Both Crusader cross country teams take AVCTL title

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The Buhler boys and girls cross country teams both took team championships at the AVCTL Div III meet held in McPherson Thursday.

Emma Willison and Amaleigh Mattison finished second and third to lead the way for the girls who scored 24 points to easily outdistance Circle.

The boys race was a great duel between El Dorado’s Ezekiel Kemboi and Buhler freshman Tanner Lindahl. Kemboi was able to out-race Lindahl to the finish line with both running identical times of 16 minutes, 17 seconds. Kemboi ended up winning by just 76/100ths of a second. Rand Lorentz and Cordell Hendrickson were also in the top ten, leading the Crusaders to a narrow 14-point win over El Dorado.
