HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the second time this week, the Hutch Salthawk soccer team pitched a shutout as they blanked Ark City 1-nil at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
Mondell Toney got the lone goal. Once again, the backfield made the tally stand up. The Salthawks scored an identical 1-nil win over Newton on Tuesday.
Francisco Villanueva had six saves in the winning effort.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday when they travel to Salina Central.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High tennis team lost just one match all day long as the Salthawks easily won their home meet on Thursday. Hutch finished with a team total of 15 points to easily outdistance Garden City’s 10. Dodge City, Newton and Heights rounded out the field.
In number one singles, Sydnee Foster went 4-0 on the day, as did Caroline Fee in number two singles.
The only blemish on a nearly-perfect day was in number one doubles where Emilee Railsback and Gracie Foster went 3-1.
Lauren Ollenburger and Chloe Foster finished 4-0.
PRATT, Kan. — The Nickerson cross country team ran at the Pratt Invitational Thursday. The Panthers did not score in the final team standings.
On the girls side, Nicole Moore finished in 17th place with a time of 23:53. For the boys, Alex Nava led the way with an 11th-place finish in 18:59 for the 5K run.
Pratt won the girls team title while St. John took top honors in the boys team standings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Animal Shelter will hold an adoption event on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in the Hutchinson Mall.
Dogs and cats will be available for adoption. All animals are vaccinated, chipped and spayed or neutered.
The shelter will also hold an adoption event on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Petco on East 17th.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is hard to believe, but the first set of parent-teacher conferences are coming up next week for Hutchinson USD 308.
Elementary conferences are by appointment with teachers. Those conferences will be on Wednesday evening and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4.
At Hutchinson Middle School and Hutchinson High School, no appointments are needed. Hutchinson Middle School conferences will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4 on both HMS campuses, while HHS conferences will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Salthawk Activity Center on Thursday.
There are no parent-teacher conferences on Friday, Oct. 5.
While classes will be on regular schedules Monday through Wednesday, there will be no class for students on Thursday and Friday.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After going 1-3 at their home tournament last weekend, the Blue Dragons have another round of tough competition at the TJC Invitational in Tyler, Texas, Friday and Saturday.
The Dragons will play Blinn Friday morning at 11 followed by a match against Hill Junior College at 1 p.m. The Saturday matches have the Dragons taking on North Central College at 9 a.m. followed by Monroe College at noon.
The Dragons are 8-8 on the season and 6-2 in the conference.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Housing Commission will take a month before revisiting the rental registration and inspection program.
The Housing Commission got an update on the decisions made by the City Council to keep the program in place, but made major changes to the program. What those changes will be will come from the commission.
No timeline was given for when the commission might have a new proposal for the council.
Discussion about the future of the program began in August and came to a head when the commission first considered ending the program. At a later meeting, however, the commission decided to keep the program.
That was met with much discussion by the council, which eventually came to the decision to keep the program, but make changes.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team was held to a season-low shot total as Cloud County frustrated the Blue Dragons at nearly every turn in a key Jayhawk West contest on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
After battling to scoreless draw in the first half, Cloud County scored one minute into the second half and handed Hutchinson its first loss of the season with a 2-0 win.
The Blue Dragons fall to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Jayhawk West. Cloud County is now 8-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. With Barton’s win over Northwest Tech on Wednesday, the Cougars are alone in first place in the conference with 21 points. Cloud County is second with 18 points and the Blue Dragons are third with 16 points.
Cloud County won its third-straight game over the Blue Dragons, but Hutchinson maintains a 12-3 all-time series lead over Cloud County.
After a defensive stalemate through the first 20 minutes – neither team sent a shot on goal – the Thunderbirds started to dictate play. Blue Dragon keeper Taylor Camp had to make three first-half saves, but the Blue Dragons were never in any danger of giving up a goal in the first half. The Blue Dragon defensive group of Hailey Burke, Angela Rader, Bailey Flowers and Jenna Boese was efficient at clearing the ball and keeping the T-Birds from mounting a serious threat.
The only shot the Blue Dragons had in the opening half was a Burke free kick.
One minute into the second half, Gabriela de Jesus broke to the right of Camp and from a sharp angle guided a left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the game’s first tally with 44 minutes to play.
The Thunderbirds got an insurance goal 13 minutes later and Izabella Christina took a long pass and from outside the box lobbed a shot over Camp into the goal for a 2-0 lead with 30:50 to play.
Camp (6-1-1) finished with a season-high seven saves for the Blue Dragons.
Hutchinson plays host to Northwest Tech at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Carey Park Golf Course will be a busy place Thursday with 21 teams and more than
120 golfers at the Hutchinson High Invitational. The meet gets underway at 10 a.m. Buhler will also be on hand for that meet.
SOCCER:
After their 1-nil win over Newton on Tuesday, the Salthawk soccer team is back at home for a match with Ark City starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Salthawk Complex.
Buhler is on the road this evening with a match at McPherson starting at 6:30.
CROSS COUNTRY:
Lots of cross country is scheduled around the area. Trinity Catholic runs at the Halstead Invitational at Wedgewood Golf Course at 4:30 p.m.
Central Christian is at the Berean Academy Invitational at Harvey County East Park at 4 p.m.
Nickerson is at the Pratt Invitational at 4 p.m. at Lemon City Park.
TENNIS:
The Salthawks will host their invitational starting at 10 a.m. at the Fairgrounds Tennis Complex.
Trinity Catholic is at Circle starting at 3 p.m.
