PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Buhler finished in third place and Nickerson ended up with eighth at the Pretty Prairie Invitational held Tuesday at The Links golf course.

Kate McPherson led the way for the Crusaders with a score of 51, which was good enough for sixth place. Callie Cooper was also in the top ten at ninth with a score of 53.  Nickerson was led by Alycen Berridge, who carded a 56 and finished 16th.

PRATT, Kan. — The Nickerson High School volleyball team continued its fine play from last weekend and took a pair of matches in Pratt Tuesday evening.

The Panthers defeated Lyons in straight sets 25-22 and 25-14. In the late match, the Panthers downed Pratt in three sets 18-25, 25-16 and 25-21.

Also last night:

Buhler split a pair of matches in McPherson. The Crusaders beat Circle 2-0 and lost to McPherson 2-1. Faith Kretzer had six kills for the Crusaders against Circle while Hadley Waldron served eight aces in the match.

In the McPherson match, Kretzer added eight more kills while Maddie Holland and Sierra Sherry added six a piece.

The Crusaders are now 13-7 on the season and 3-3 in the AVCTL.

NEWTON, Kan. — Wyatt Johnson scored the only goal of the match with a little over 10 minutes to play in the first half and the Hutch High defense took it from there in a 1-nil win over Newton.

Francisco Villanueva had a great game in the net and collected 12 saves on the evening.

The Salthawks return to action again on Thursday against Arkansas City at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team overcame 29 combined attack and serving errors and net violations to even its record after a Jayhawk West sweep of Independence on Monday night at the ICC Fieldhouse.

Playing each other for the first time since 2000, Hutchinson defeated Independence 25-13, 25-15, 27-25. Independence moved into the Jayhawk West this season.

Hutchinson improves to 8-8 overall and is 6-2 at the mid-point of the Jayhawk West season. Independence falls to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Eden Hiebert and Lexi Hogan led the Blue Dragons with nine kills each. Chloe Partridge added eight kills and Elena Takova had six kills. Hiebert hit .444 and Hogan hit .412.

The Blue Dragons had 35 total kills, but had 12 attack errors, eight service errors and were called for nine net violations.

Hutchinson held its second opponent to negative hitting as the Pirates had 24 kills and 25 attack errors. The Pirates added 10 service errors.

Cassidy Crites had 11 set assists, while Payton Gawith and Eboni Sapien had eight each. Libero Raychel Reed had a match-high 15 assists.

After dominating the first two sets, the Blue Dragons found themselves down 23-21 in the third set. Takova tied the set at 23 with a kill and ace serve. The Dragons then fought off a set point against with a back-row kill from Takova. Tied at 25, Hiebert had a kill and Crites and Hydeah Hinesman closed the match with a double block.

The Blue Dragons will play next in the TJC Classic in Tyler, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.
