Chamber releases names of 6 board nominations

HUTCHINSON. Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently approved six members to be voted on by membership to serve on the Chamber Board. The nominations came during the board’s Sept. 11 meeting.

The new members are:

David Cox – The Bradbury Group
Amy Kraft – Kraft Electric
Dr. Kirsten Paulsrud – Hutchinson Clinic
Eddie Smith – Kuhn Krause, Inc.
Clark Wedel – Haven USD 312
Greg Woodyard – First National Bank

The Chamber is still taking nominations to the board. The 2019 Chamber Board ballot will be sent to all Chamber members in good standing on or before Oct. 1, 2018.

USD 308 teachers approve new collective bargaining agreement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Teachers in Hutchinson USD 308 have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement after giving it overwhelming support during a vote on Friday. The agreement comes after a meeting last Thursday between the District and the teachers union.

Under the new agreement, teachers will receive — on average — a five percent pay increase with the base salary increasing from $37,501 to $ 38,550. The district will also increase its share of insurance costs by $30 and providers stipends for special education work.

The agreement comes much sooner than last year’s contract where the two sides were far apart well into the school year. The teachers finally ratified a new contract in January.

The board is expected to give its approval to the new contract during the next agenda session.

3 Hutchinson residents injured in Marion County accident

MARION, Kan. — Three Hutchinson Residents were among five injured in a two-vehicle accident in Marion County Monday morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 26-year old Edward Fowler of Hutchinson was going west on US-56 when he turned left into an oncoming van driven by 71-year old Donald Keazer of Marion. The two vehicles collided at the intersection of US-56 and Orchard Street in the Marion city limits.

Fowler and two passengers, 24-year-old Dana Koenig and 6-year-old Emmett Mayberry-Koenig, were all taken by EMS to Hillsboro Community Hospital for treatment of injuries. Keazer and a passenger, 36-year-old Emily Caldwell, were also taken to the hospital in Hillsboro. A second passenger in the vehicle, 70-year old Loretta Keazer, was not injured.

The accident happened just before 11:30 a.m.

Hawk XC runs well in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. — The Hutch High cross country team had a nice showing in Wichita Saturday.

In the varsity girls race, the Hawks finished in third place as a team. Stella Foster led the way with a 4th place finish in a time of 21:42. Jacquline Lewton was also in the top ten in 9th with a time of 22:14. Perla Rodriguez was 37th, Kaylee Unruh ended up in 40th and Maritaz Jimenez was right behind her at 41st.

On the boys side, Noah Cole won the varsity race with a time of 17:15 to lead the Hawks to a 5th place finish in the team title. It’s the second time this week that a local runner has taken top honors in a high school cross country race. Matthew Schrag also had a great race and came home in 8th place at 18:14. Rounding out the field was Graham Barnes in 33rd; Barrett Yoder in 44th and Josh Ivey finished 55th.

HHS volleyball goes 2-3 at Maize tournament

MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutch High volleyball team finished 2-3 at a very tough Maize Invitational over the weekend.

In match one, the Hawks lost to eventual champion Kapaun Mt. Carmel 2 sets to 1 before turning around and defeating 8th-ranked Garden City in three sets. The Hawks then defeated Goddard Eisenhower, also by a 2-1 count.

After reseeding the teams, the Hawks had to face the No. 9 team in class 5A — Maize South. The Salthawks lost 2-0. Hutchinson ended up on the short end of its fifth match against Newton, who is ranked second in class 5A. The Hawks fell in straight sets.

Hutchinson is now 10-7 on the season.

Clean up continues at train derailment site

HAVEN, Kan. — Work crews are making quick clean up of Saturday’s train/semi accident near Haven, but it will be Thursday before trains start moving again.

Officials with the parent company of the K and O Railroad, Watco Transportation, say the accident Saturday caused three locomotives and 15 cars to leave the tracks. Ten of those cars were damaged beyond repair. The three locomotives were lifted back on the tracks and removed. Crews were working Monday afternoon to clear grain from the cars so they can be cut up and removed. The derailment also damaged more than 900 feet of track.

Watco wants to get the line open quickly with harvest getting into full swing. The short-line railroad carries most of the summer and fall crops from central and western Kansas to Hutchinson and Wichita for shipment by both the BNSF and Union Pacific.

City Council seeks approval of new zoning ordinance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will take final action on the rezoning proposal that would allow for more condensed development in the older parts of the city during Tuesday’s agenda session.

After getting the go-ahead to draw up the final ordinance, the Planning Department will present the final draft to the council for action.

The changes were put in place after several public meetings and studies were done to see if the infill district would make property improvement easier. One of the biggest additions with the new zoning change would allow for the construction of a small apartment on property, such as a garage apartment.

Other changes include smaller setbacks and the number of parking spaces a property must have from two to one. The new residential zone covers an area of the city from 17th south, then east and west from K-61 to Cow Creek.

Also Tuesday, the council will seek approval of a contract with KDOT for a mill and overlay on K-61 Highway stretching from G Avenue to Lorraine. The work will be done by APAC-Kansas at a cost of $491,052. KDOT will provide $300,000 in funds plus another $150,000 from the Connecting Link reserve. The city will have to provide the remaining $41,000.

The project is expected to begin soon and be completed by the end of October.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Hutchinson City Council begins at 5:30 p.m. in the city offices.

HutchCC soccer downs Hesston

HESSTON, Kan. — Playing as Jayhawk Conference rivals for the first time on Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team defeated Hesston College 4-1 at the Hesston soccer field.

The Blue Dragons remain unbeaten in six games this season with a 5-0-1 record. The Dragons are now 3-0-1 (10 points) in the conference standings. Hesston falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Freshman midfiender Naomi Waithira had a season-high four points with a goal and two assists to lead the Blue Dragons.

Brailey Moeder, Ashley Venegas and Addi White added goals for the Blue Dragons Cameron Rodriguez and Sydney Blackwell had assists.

Had it not been for the goalkeeping of Vivi Rodriguez, the Dragons would have won by a much wider margin. Rodriguez had 19 saves on 23 shots saved. Those 19 saves ties for the eighth most by a Blue Dragon opposing keeper in team history.

The Blue Dragons dominated possession and cast 36 total shots to 2 for the Larks. Blue Dragon keeper Taylor Camp had one save and one goal allowed in the game.

The Blue Dragons scored early once again, getting Moeder’s sixth goal of the season off a Waithira assist just 3:11 into the game for a 1-0 Hutch lead. Waithira scored her fourth of the season with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half and a 2-0 Hutch lead.

The Dragons made it 3-0 on an Ashley Venegas goal in the 71st minute. After a Miya Gonda goal in the 75th minute, the Blue Dragons countered by an Addi White goal in the 89th minute.

Hutchinson plays host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Dragon volleyball wins big over Garden City

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three players hit better than .440 as the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team got back to the .500 mark for the season on Saturday as the Blue Dragons earned a Jayhawk West season of Garden City at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated the Broncbusters 25-10, 25-8, 25-17 to improve to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk Conference. Garden City falls to 0-14 and 0-4 on league play. The Blue Dragons travel to Butler on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. match in the Power Plant.

Freshman outside hitter Eden Hiebert posted a season-high .542 attack percentage with 14 kills on 24 swings and only one error. Hiebert added a season-high four ace serves.

Sophomore right-side hitter Elena Takova hit .444 with 9 kills on 18 attacks with one error. Freshman Tara Davis added six kills on .500 hitting.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Garden City 46-18 in the three-set match.

Sophomore Lexi Hogan had six kills and freshman middle Chloe Partridge had four kills and a pair of aces. Partridge saw her first action of the season after turning to the lineup because of an injury.

Sophomore setter Cassidy Crites had 17 assists, while sophomore Payton Gawith added 14 assists.

Sophomore libero Raychel Reed had 18 digs and a pair of aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Claira Creach had nine digs.

The Blue Dragons had eight service aces to Garden’s two. Both teams had two blocks each.

Kaylee Line had eight kills to lead Garden City.

Set 1: A Lauren Willson kill gave Hutch an early 7-3 lead, but the Busters scored three-straight to pull within one. A Delilah Vigil kill and a Vigil/Takova stuff block ignited to the Blue Dragons for a 9-2 run and a 17-8 lead after Garden City was called for a net violation. With Hutch up 19-10 in the third, Willson tallied two more kills to close out the set. Hutch had 15 kills to Garden’s three in the opening set. Hutch errors provided the Busters seven points in the set.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons had early leads of 4-0, 7-3 and 9-4 in the second set. A Busters double block pulled them within 9-6 before Hutch exploded again, this time with a 13-1 run. Back-to-back Hiebert kills gave Hutch a 12-6 lead. Then Partridge went on a nine-point service run. Hiebert, who had seven kills in the second set, slammed one down to make it 23-7 and capped a nine-point Partridge service run. Takova’s kill ended the set at 25-8

Set 3: Hutch led 9-5, but Garden City had had three-straight kills to pull within 9-8. Hiebert had a kill and ace serve to top a 7-0 Hutch run to lead 16-8. With the Dragons up 19-10, Garden reeled off five in a row to pull within 19-15. Back-to-back Partridge kills made it 21-15 and Takova finally closed the set with a kill to close it at 25-19.
