JOPLIN, MO — The Hutchinson Community College cross country team accomplished something on Saturday that had not been done

since 2000.

The Blue Dragons won the Missouri Southern State University Stampede team title on Saturday. Added to the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic team championship on August 31, the Blue Dragons have at least two team championships in the same season in 18 years.

Hutchinson placed four runners in the Top 10 to win the MSSU Stampede team title with 41 points. Jayhawk Conference rival Allen was second with 67 points and Baker University was third with 142 points.

Freshman Andrew Kibet dominated the Stampede field, winning his second-race of the season with an 8K time of 24 minutes, 42.6 seconds, the fifth-fastest performance in Blue Dragon men’s cross country history.

Kibet won the men’s race by a staggering 1 minutes, 23.05 second gap.

Freshman Sylvestre Kiraber placed sixth for the Blue Dragons with a time of 26:15.3. Freshman Brett Hillabrand placed eighth with a time of 26:42.8. Sophomore Jared Stark was 10th after a career-best time of 26:43.6. Sophomore Conner Kaufmann was the fifth Blue Dragon to finish, placing 17th with a time of 27:22.3.

Women’s Race:

 

Two weeks ago, Hutchinson Community College freshman runner Lisayo Ewoi was nipped at the wire by

Pratt’s Aminata Kenyewani at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic.

Ewoi left nothing to chance on Saturday at the Missouri Southern State University Stampede.

Ewoi won the MSSU Stampede and did so breaking a 17-year Blue Dragon women’s cross country record.

Ewoi won the Stampede in a time of 18 minutes, 29.1 seconds. That time blew away the old Blue Dragon women’s cross country record set by Ruth Limo in the 2001 Region VI championships. This was only the second time a Blue Dragon women’s cross country runner broke the 19-minute plateau.

Ewoi’s winning time on Saturday was 12 seconds over Pratt’s Kenyewani.

The Blue Dragons had two runners finish in the Top 20 and 4 of 5 Hutch scorers finished in the Top 25. That helped Hutchinson to a fourth-place finish in the 20-team field. The Dragons scored 104 points. Cowley was the team champion with 61 points, followed by Southwestern College (76 points) and Friends University (104 points). Allen was fifth (159 point).

Sophomore Aileen Gomez finished 19th overall with a time of 19:46.0, her second-fastest career time as a Blue Dragon.

Sophomore Sarah Patteson posted a tie for the 20th-fastest time in Blue Dragon history with a 21st-place time of 19:46.0

Freshman Gabby Collins ran a time of 19:49.0, which was 24th on Saturday and tied for the 22nd fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Sophomore Sam Ahmara was the fifth Blue Dragon to finish. She finished 54th with a time of 20:34.0, a career-best time.

Other Blue Dragon results were: America Garcia (72nd/20:56.3), Macy Linenberger (98th/21:36.5), Ashton Schlickau (100th/21:38.0), Caitlin Schlickau (112th/22:04.7) and Carissa Youngs (132nd/22:38.1).

The Blue Dragons will be off until October 6 when Hutchinson will run at the Emporia State Invitational.

SALINA, Kan. — The Buhler soccer team could not find the net last night in a tough 1-nil loss to Salina South at Salina Stadium.

South’s score with just two minutes left in the first half was the game’s lone goal.

Buhler falls to 3-2-2 and was limited to just eight shots on goal.

The Crusaders travel to Rose Hill on Tuesday.

WICHITA, Kan. — Meredith Kinney shot a 49 and finished 12th to lead the way for the Hutchinson High School golf team Thursday at the Eisenhower Invitational at Tex Consolver golf course in Wichita. As a team, the Hawks struggled with a seventh place finish in the eight-team field. Reaghan Martin also finished in the top 20 in 14th place with a score of 50.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buhler Freshman Tanner Lindahl ran away to a win at the Buhler Invitational Cross Country meet at a windy Prairie Ridge Park course on Thursday. Lindahl pulled away to a :36-second victory in a time of 17:11 over 5,000 meters. Rand Lorentz also placed in the top 10 for the Crusaders with a seventh place finish in 19:22.

Teamwise, the Crusaders had to settle for third place behind Great Bend and Eisenhower.

Trinity Catholic finished in 10th place in the final team standings with Zac Biel leading the way in 30th place in a time of 19:47. Nickerson did not score in the team standings. Alex Hava finished 53rd in 21:11 for the Panthers.

On the girls side, the Crusaders put five runners in the top 20 as Buhler won the team title. Emma Willison led the way with a seventh place finish in 22:08. Iris Rees was 10th in 22:30 and Daycee DeWindt was right behind her in 11th in 22:32.

Trinity Catholic finished in 10th place in the team standings with Emma Vogel placing 27th in a time of 23:48.

Nickerson’s Nicole Moore ended up 49th on the day in a time of 26:19. The Panthers did not score in the team standings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mondell Toney scored a hat trick and Eric Mendoza and Wyatt Johnson each collected two goals as the Hutch High soccer team earned its second win of the season with a 7-1 victory over Goddard Thursday night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Francisco Vilianeuva collected five saves on the night.

The Hawks are now 2-4-1 on the season and return to action Tuesday at Maize.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Freshman Macy Smith became the third Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer player this season to record a hat trick as the Blue Dragons shut out Garden City 8-0 in a Jayhawk West matchup Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Hutchinson is now 22-0 all-time against Garden City, outscoring the Broncbusters by an aggregate score of 133-7 with 15 shutouts.

The Blue Dragons improve to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 (7 points) in the Jayhawk West. Garden City is 1-3 and 1-1 in the league. Hutchinson plays at Hesston College on Saturday night.

Blue Dragon head coach Sammy Lane won his 197th career game on the Blue Dragon bench.

Smith posted the 84th all-time hat trick in team history on Wednesday, joining Megan Maslak and Brailey Moeder as players with hat tricks this season. The freshman forward was credited with the game-winning goal when she found the back of the net 4 minutes, 22 seconds into the game. Smith scored her second goal late in the first half and in the 78th minute to make it 7-0.

Smith was one of seven Blue Dragons with a multi-point game.

Freshman Ashley Venegas, Maslak, freshman Naomi Waithira and sophomore Kaitlyn Sabala each had one goal and one assist. Moeder and freshman Alix Miller both had a pair of assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Camp (3-0-1) posted her third shutout of the season and the program’s 143rd all-time shutout. The only true scoring chance Garden City had was a penalty kick. Camp was equal to the task, making a huge save on Paul Carassco’s penalty kick attempt.

Camp is the third Blue Dragon keeper with a save on a penalty kick in team history. Blue Dragon opponents are now just 1 of 4 all time in penalty kicks against the Dragons in program history.

The Blue Dragons out-shot Garden City 26-5 overall and 15-3 in shots on goal.

The Blue Dragons led 5-0 at halftime going with a strong southerly wind. But took until the 78th minute for the Dragons to crack the scoreboard in the second half. Smith scored her third in the 78th minute.

Hutch then executed a perfect corner kick when Moeder’s corner was headed into the goal by Sydney Blackwell.

COLBY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team was trying to pull off a feat done only five times in program history on Wednesday at undefeated Colby.

The Blue Dragons dropped the first two sets to Colby, but rallied to win the third and fourth sets. Hutch had a late lead and had Colby on the ropes. The Trojans remained undefeated with a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 16-14 win over Hutchinson.

Hutch is now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk West. Colby improves to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the West. The Blue Dragons are home on Saturday against Garden City in a 5 p.m. first serve at the Sports Arena.

After rallying to force a fifth set, the Blue Dragons built a 12-9 lead in the fifth set, forcing Colby to take a timeout. Colby then scored the next three points to knot the match again. A critical call went against the Dragons when the down official called a late touch on the Dragons. Instead of Hutch leading 13-10, the lead was 12-11. Hutch had one match point, but couldn’t convert.

Sophomore Elena Takova had a huge match hitting .410 with 19 kills on 39 swings and only three errors.

Freshman Lauren Willson had a season-high 15 kills and hit .182. Freshman Eden Hiebert had 15 kills on .163 hitting. Sophomore Lexi Hogan had 12 kills.

Willson posted her first career double-double adding 13 digs. Sophomore setter Cassidy Crites had her fifth double-double of the season with 22 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore Payton Gawith had 12 assists.

Sophomore libero Raychel Reed had a season-high 26 digs.

Hutchinson is now 0-2 in five-set matches this season and has dropped six consecutive five-set matches going back to last season.
